The BHMS 8th Grade Foods & Nutrition 1 classes recently participated in an annual "BHMS Iron Chef" contest. This is a part of a Middle Years Programme (MYP) unit where the students work with a "secret ingredient” to design their own recipes. Students' dishes were judged by Mr. English, Mr. Fitzgerald and suprise Judge Superintendent Glass, along with other staff members, on three criteria: taste, presentation, and creative use of the secret ingredient. Each class period was assigned a different secret ingredient, and students worked in teams to create a dish that met all three of the criteria.
The secret ingredients were apples, eggs, cucumbers and spinach. As you can see from the photos, our 8th graders did a great job in both preparation and presentation, and judges report that the dishes were delicious! Winning dishes in each “secret ingredient” category were:
Apples: BLT with apple and basil aioli, served with Butternut squash and apple soup.
Team Chefs: Grace Weaver, Julia Kassab, Emily Ross, and Zoe Gajewski
Eggs: Individual Egg Casseroles baked in bread bowl.
Team Chefs: Taylor Weiwiora, McKenzie Norman, Sydney Petoskey, and Ellie Schrader
Cucumbers: Cucumber Noodles with chicken stir fry
Team Chefs: Dov Mandel, Josh Davis. Albert Tedjo, and John Secrest
Spinach: Spinach Pasta Bake
