SCHOOL NEWS

Principal's Message 3-9-18

Dear East Hills Community,

This week was highlighted by a number of community events.  Today was a Hat Day in support of Glenn Cabbell and his family.  Glenn is battling cancer and our community is supporting him and his family. The generosity and care demonstrated by our students today was amazing.  Here is a picture from Mrs. Byrd’s 4th grade class today.

Another opportunity to support the Cabbell family has recently been organized by some of our 8th grade students.  Using the hashtags: #TeamGlenn and #CabbellStrong, students are working with a local vendor to have t-shirts made so we can continue to raise awareness and support the family . . . see below for all the details.  I am so impressed with our students and families - thank you!

Also this week was the first annual BHS District Multicultural Celebration hosted at BHHS. What an amazing event!  Thank you to all the students and families that participated in the event. A special thank you to our PTO, district PTOC, and PTO members (including Erin Watson and Tracey Kevelighan) for promoting and organizing the event with other families from across the district.

With an eye toward next week, we are very excited to host the K-8 Eastover and East Hills Science Fair on Tuesday, March 13 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Please consider coming out to East HIlls on Tuesday night to take a look at all the amazing science projects!

If you have an eighth grader, please take time to sign-up for a meeting slot to meet with your Bloomfield Hills High School counselors.  See the article below for all the details. Sign-up closes this weekend on Sunday, March 11 at 11:59 p.m.

This week's broadcast is full of many important articles and topics!

Literacy Spirit Week - Week of March 26

Our Literacy Spirit Week is the culmination of March is Reading Month. During our Cav Time (Friday, March 2), we kicked off our focus on literacy by having students bring in their favorite books and sharing a hashtag or headline about their book.  Check out some pictures of students sharing their books and hashtags/headlines - these are displayed on screens throughout the building. Throughout this month, students have been voting on their favorite titles in two March Madness Book Brackets (4-5 Elementary and 6-8 Middle School).  The winning match up takes place the week of March 19. As we head into the final days of March, we would like to celebrate our literacy efforts with a spirit week - the Literacy Spirit Week. It's a week of education, important conversation, and fun!

Listed Below are the Dress-Up Days
Monday, March 26:  In Honor of Dr. Seuss - Wear a Hat Day
Tuesday, March 27:  "Read a Shirt" Day (Words on a Shirt - Consider Wearing #TeamGlenn T-Shirt)
Wednesday, March 28: Dress Like Your Favorite Book Character Day
Thursday, March 29: Pajama Day (Read-a-Thon Day) - Please no slippers!

Costumes for any of the dress-up days must adhere to the following guidelines:
-Costumes should be INNOCENT and FUN.
-Masks, hoods or other concealing headwear are not allowed for safety purposes. We need to be able to identify all students and adults in the building.
-Non-concealing head wear: cowboy hats, visors, baseball caps, tiaras, and other similar headwear that allows students faces to be seen may be worn.
-Dress code rules apply with respect to length of shorts and skirts, tank tops, undergarments showing, drug and alcohol innuendo, profanity or double meanings are not allowed.
-To avoid the perception of ridicule, costumes should not be of adults or other students in our building.
-To avoid any perception of offensiveness, costumes should not be of religious figures.
-Costumes should not be gory or 'bloody."
-PROPS SHOULD NOT BE BROUGHT TO SCHOOL - This includes lightsabers, any replica swords, guns or knives, wands, etc. With nearly 600 middle level students, props become hitting devices or prime targets for students to grab or argue over.

Thank you for your help with making Literacy Spirit Week a fun celebration for East Hills!

Neal Pullukat Move Forward to State Level Competition as East Hills Geo Bee Winner

Each year thousands of schools in the United States participate in the National Geographic Bee using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society. The contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography. This year, Neal Pullukat of the 7th grade will represent East Hills at the state level competition on April 6th at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. This is a uniquely special honor as Neal is the first Cavalier in recent memory to make the state level championship. We wish him luck and are proud that Neal is representing East Hills!

Did You Know . . . ?

. . . that 1st Friday popcorn sales have raised around $400 each month.  This money allows more of our students to attend field trips and activities at East Hills.

East Hills GET and Cavalier Fund Information
To further our mission for equity and inclusion, the East Hills Global Education Team (GET) is pleased to share information about the Cavalier Fund. The purpose of this fund is to provide access for all students to enjoy school activities (e.g., field trips and other specific events and opportunities) including other special needs as they arise.  Our intention is to provide families with a chance to give funds to assist our students in a direct and meaningful way.

March Learner Profile Attribute is Open-Minded

The MARCH Learner Profile Attribute:  OPEN-MINDED

The
IB Learner Profile attribute for March is Open-Minded:  As an IB student, I respect the differences in others.  I listen to other peoples' thoughts and ideas.

With this learner profile attribute, I show cooperation and respect.  I work well with others and am considerate of myself, others and the world in which I live.

How can parents help to develop this Open-Minded trait at home?

·       Encourage your child to try new things – new foods, new games and new activities.

·       Expose your child to different festivals, celebrations and traditions and be sure to present them in a non-judgmental way.

·       Encourage your child to really listen to others when they speak.

·       Introduce literature about many different cultures into your home library. Be sure that it is appropriate and reflects the culture in an appropriate way.

Student thoughts on our monthly LP:
"To me, open-minded means to celebrate our differences, and not let them divide us." Magdalena Leonard-Mr. Shallow's 4th grade class

"Being open-minded means standing out, respecting our differences and trying new things." Skylar Astras-Mr. Shallow's 4th grade class

"To me, open-minded means to be open to new ideas and trying new things, and to think outside the box!!" Marianne Azzali Bello, Mrs. Walch's 4th grade class.

Spotlight on Student Learning: 6th Grade Science Towers

In 6th grade science, students are looking at the relationship between human development and nature.  During a lab last week, students designed structures based on specific constraints and criteria and tested their structures against various wind speeds.   Mrs. Endres and Mr. Lapinski varied the constraints for each group, and tested their towers using a blow-dryer and  fan set at different speeds.  Students inquired about the best design structure to fit their needs, sketched and revised their design, and created a final product to be tested in front of the class.

According to Jacon Welch, "We are learning how to work together and use different materials to design our towers." In the same unit, students are also reflecting on the impact of human development on water sources in our local community as well as other areas throughout the world.

And, as always, please feel free to contact me regarding anything MYP!

7th/8th Grade Band & Orchestra Festival Performances - March 10 at BHHS

Saturday, March 10, 2018, at Bloomfield Hills High School

Band - performance at 8:00am in the BHHS Auditorium

Orchestra - performance at 1:05pm in the BHHS Auditorium

What is Band & Orchestra Festival?
Since 1935, the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA) has run festivals for school ensembles.  This is not a contest.  Rather, student groups are graded in five categories: Tone, Intonation, Rhythm, Technique, and Interpretation.

How are the students judged?
Three adjudicators judge the concert portion of the festival. They are veteran teachers or professors who have been certified by MSBOA to judge Band & Orchestra Festivals. Each judge grades the groups on a scale of I-V, with I being the highest rating. Those three ratings are then averaged into a Concert Rating, which in turn is averaged with the Sight-Reading Rating for the Final Rating.

What is Sight Reading?
After the group performs on stage, we will be ushered into a different room for Sight Reading. Students will be asked to perform a new piece of music they have never seen or played before. We have 5 minutes to discuss the selection before we perform for the judge.

Can Parents Attend?
YES!  Please do!  Band and orchestra students will need parent support in the audience and throughout the entire festival process.  In addition, we need 3-4 parents to chaperone.  Information about joining as a chaperone will be sent home in February, along with a detailed map and itinerary.

Student Responsibility
Students should be practicing their parts every day – as music performance is a team effort.  Our students are terrific young people, but it takes the efforts of all students to have a successful performance. This includes both class and at home practice. Every student's effort and attendance at rehearsals, clinic, and concert will contribute to a successful festival performance and experience.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child's director.

Kind regards,

Mr. Nathanael Erde, Director of Orchestras - nerde@bloomfield.org
Mrs. Rachel Lucas, Director of Bands - rlucas@bloomfield.org

Volleyball News

The 8th Grade Volleyball Team played two matches away this week. The first match was away at Berkshire on Monday, the girls won 2-1. The team served very well and the communication was excellent by the entire team. The girls then traveled to cross town rival BH yesterday and lost a hard fought match 2-1. The team gave BH all they wanted and then some to force a third and deciding game, but fell short 21-13. Coach Hurdle (BHHS varsity volleyball coach) was pleased with the fight from the Lady Cavs. Come see the Lady Cavs next week with two matches at home Mon and Wed.

East Hills Spelling Bee Champion - Lionel Gaba

The national spelling bee was founded in 1925 and has been held continuously since, except during the World War II years of 1943, 1944 and 1945.

Every year, students from all walks of life have the opportunity to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, one of the nation's oldest and most iconic competitions. They progress from classroom to cafeteria, from auditorium to civic center, delighting friends, family, sponsors and fans, just as millions of other students have done before them.

Our school champion for this year is sixth grader Lionel Gaba who won the school championship round with the word “mandible.” Lionel will move on to represent East Hills at the Oakland County Spelling Bee.

Opportunities for Students Entering High School in 2018-19

Do you ever wonder what opportunities and pathways are available for students entering high school? View the High School Opportunities Packet.

Club Information: Check Out Our East Hills Website!

In an effort to provide families with quick access to club information, we have created a club page on our school website.  Please click HERE to find out all our club offerings and meeting dates and locations.

Winter Recess Guidelines Reminder

East Hills holds an outdoor recess daily unless it is raining or temperatures drop below 10 degrees (or 10 degrees wind chill). It is essential that students arrive to school with appropriate winter weather play gear—warm coats, hats, gloves, scarves, and other warm clothing. We recommend that all gear be clearly labeled with the student's first and last name. Once the snow flies, students should have snow boots and snow pants for outdoor play.

Athletic Physical Form Information

Students must have a current athletic physical form on file in the East Hills office before participating in any team sport, in any manner, including tryouts or practices. A physical is considered current if it took place on or after April 15 of the previous school year. The district form, available at the link below, must be completed and signed by your physician. Incomplete or unsigned forms will not be accepted. Also see the district news article in this broadcast to learn more about Pay-to-Participate fees associated with athletic and club participation.
