STUDENT CLUB SIGN UP COMING UP

BHMS is excited to offer 13 clubs this year, with availability varying by grade. Students will have the opportunity to sign up for clubs during all lunch hours on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, September 26, 27 & 28. Please open this Club Schedule and Contact Information to see what is available to your student.

All students who participate in a BHMS club must submit a Pay to Participate (P2P) fee to the District. If you've already submitted this fee for your student, nothing more needs to be done. If you have not, please print out a P2P Form and follow instructions for payment directly to the District. Please do not send the fee to the club sponsor or school office.

We encourage you to review the club options with your student before the sign up next week, to make sure that your family's schedule can accommodate the club schedule. For families of 5th and 6th graders in particular, it may be helpful to have your student bring in a piece of paper with the club(s) for which you want them to sign up. This is the first exposure to clubs for many of the students, and the list will help ensure that they get signed up for the right clubs.

As you review club options, please, keep the following in mind:

1)      Students in morning clubs may not enter the building until five minutes before the start of the club.

2)      Students in afternoon clubs must be picked up immediately at the end of a meeting. Sponsors are not available to supervise after that time, and students may not remain in the building unsupervised. Out of safety for your student and consideration to club sponsors, students who are not picked up on time will no longer be allowed to participate in a club.

Remember that the District offers Kidz Zone before and after school care at BHMS. If you need to drop your student off earlier than a club start time, or can't pick them up immediately at the end of a club meeting, we recommend that you register them for Kidz Zone. The program runs from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. but pre-registration is required. It is not a drop-in program.

SPRING M-STEP RESULTS

Students have been given their 2017 Spring M-Step results in an envelope to hand carry home to their families. This report includes a summary of your student's scale scores, performance levels and claim levels within each of the subjects tested at your student's grade level. This is the third year our students took this state assessment that was administered online. The M-Step assessment is only one data point that Bloomfield Hills uses to analyze district programs and systems. Bloomfield Hills Schools believes in a balanced assessment system to measure student success. If you have questions regarding the M-Step assessment, your child's progress in school, or any of the information included in the Parent Report, please contact your child's counselor. Mrs. Jaster is the Counselor for grades 5 and 7. Mr. Flevaris is the Counselor for grades 6 and 8.

8th GRADE WASHINGTON D.C. TRIP PARENT INFORMATION MEETING

The annual BHMS 8th grade Washington, D.C. trip is planned for April 25-28, 2018. Return to BHMS will be at approximately 9 a.m. on the morning of April 28. There will be a parent information meeting on Tuesday, October 3, at 7:00 p.m. in the BHMS cafeteria. BHMS teachers Mr. Neuwirth and Mr. Baker will once again be the trip coordinators. At the meeting they will present information about the trip, the itinerary and the cost. If you are a parent of an eighth-grader who is interested in going on the trip, please attend this important meeting. If you would like more information prior to the meeting, please email Mr. Neuwirth or Mr. Baker.

MUSIC BOOSTERS NEWS

HELP KEEP THE MUSIC PLAYING - JOIN MUSIC BOOSTERS! Music Boosters welcomes all families of students in the band, orchestra, choir, and musical drama to participate in our annual membership drive.  Music Boosters was not part of the online registration process, so here is a Music Boosters Membership Form to make it easy for you to join. Your membership dues helps fund a percussion ensemble instructor for all grades, instrumental clinicians/piano accompanist for all grades, instrument luggage tags for 5th graders, 6th grade Domination Tour buses, 7th grade music field trips, 8th grade musical drama costumes and professional choreographer, 8th grade Chicago shirts and graduation medals, and so much more!

7th GRADE BAND & ORCHESTRA PARENTS: Music Boosters will measure students in class next week for tuxedo shirts. A form will be sent home with your student's recommended size and the website information for ordering. The online store will be open for two weeks.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR BAKE SALES: Volunteers are needed to bake and sell for BHMS Music Boosters bake sales, which take place every Wednesday after school. Bakers are asked to bring in two dozen individual pieces, which must be entirely free of nuts or nut products/by products. If purchasing baked goods, please check that they are also from a nut-free facility. Baked goods can be dropped off in the office any time during your scheduled bake sale day. If you are signing up to sell, please arrive at 2:45 p.m. for setup in the Gateway area. Click here to volunteer to bake or sell on assigned dates. Any questions or if you can't make it? Please email contact Patty Shaw.

PTO NEWS

The new BHMS PTO Co-Presidents, Stacy Fox and Deb Zupanic, have created the weekly PTO NEWS , which will be linked to our Lancer Update each week. PTO really does make a difference in the activities and opportunities afforded to our students and staff. Please be an active member. This week's newsletter offers some fun volunteer opportunities, including the book fair and the October family event.

"Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does." - William James

YEARBOOK PHOTOS NEEDED

You can now upload pictures for consideration for use in the yearbook! Mrs. Iacobelli, our Yearbook Coordinator, is using an app/website this year to help streamline the process. Click Here to access the site. When registering, make sure to choose Bloomfield Hills Middle School as your home school. Pictures of sporting events and extracurricular activities are especially welcome.

GREAT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Did you know that the BHMS school clinic is staffed entirely by parent/guardian volunteers? Each volunteer works just one half day a month, but is a tremendous help to the office staff. Not a nurse or a doctor? Don't worry. In the health clinic volunteers don't dispense medicine; just (lots of) ice bags, band aids and TLC. There are a number of slots still unfilled for the 2017-2018 school year. If you are interested in a permanent slot, please contact Stephanie Spinale at 248-207-2571 or email stephspinale4201@outlook.com.

NO DOGS ON GROUNDS DURING SCHOOL OR AT AFTER SCHOOL EVENTS - INCLUDING SPORTS PRACTICES OR GAMES

As a reminder, for the safety of our students, staff, and visitors, dogs are not allowed on school grounds between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. when school is in session OR at any time that school events - including sports practices and games - are taking place.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION REDEMPTION DATE COMING SOON

Throughout the years families have supported BHMS by turning in Box Tops for Education, which can be found on numerous food and other products.  Each Box Top is worth ten cents to BHMS -- but worth nothing if you toss them in your waste basket. The math is simply amazing. If each of our 750 students brought in 10 box tops each month, for the nine months of the school year, BHMS would earn $6,750 to use toward programs or purchases not covered under the budget.

The first of two Box Tops redemption periods is coming up soon, so please send in any Box Tops that you've already saved up. There is a collection box in the Main Office. Thanks for supporting BHMS in small ways that can have big results. For more information about products that contain Box Tops, click HERE.

SHOP AT KROGER AND SUPPORT BHMS

You can support BHMS when you do your regular shopping at Kroger by designating Bloomfield Hills Middle School as your Plus Card Community Rewards program recipient. The Kroger website provides instructions for setting up a new account, or for designating Bloomfield Hills Middle School (Organization Code 28755) to your existing account.

Once you've designated BHMS as your organization, each time you shop at Kroger and use your Plus Card, BHMS earns reward points, which translate into checks paid to BHMS quarterly. That's all there is to it!

PLEASE DO NOT BRING ITEMS CONTAINING NUTS OR NUT PRODUCTS INTO ANY AREA OF THE BUILDING

Please remember that BHMS IS AN ENTIRELY NUT-RESTRICTED BUILDING, 24-HOURS A DAY, SEVEN DAYS A WEEK. There are students in the building who are highly allergic to peanuts and all kinds of tree nuts, and their well-being is of concern.

Students should not bring lunch or snacks containing nuts or nut products. Additionally, while your donations and gifts are very much appreciated, we ask that you make sure anything given to the office, to teachers or classrooms, for bake sales, end-of-sports or club parties or any other occasion are free of all nuts and nut products. Thank you so much for your consideration.
