BHS District Strategic Plan |
Bloomfield Hills Schools has embarked on a journey to develop a ten-year strategic plan. Project Innovations of Farmington Hills was selected by the Board of Education in November to guide the community through the process.
The management consulting firm is drawing on the expertise of its president, Charles B. Fleetham, as project leader, as well as partners Anderson Economic Group of Lansing; Dr. Suzanne Wilson, chair of the department of teacher education at Michigan State University; Mackinac Partners of Bloomfield Township; and Wade-Trim, Inc. of Livonia.
The Project Innovations team is working closely with Bloomfield Hills Schools administrators and board members to facilitate the strategic planning process, which includes integrating the district’s current draft strategic plan with wide-spread community engagement. Project Innovations expects to present a plan that has been fully vetted by the community to the Board of Education in June 2008.
Project Innovations clients have included Michigan Technological University, the City of Kalamazoo, the City of Grand Rapids, and the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department.
Arguably the healthiest school district in Michigan with years of budget surpluses, a top credit rating and a history of instructional excellence, Bloomfield Hills Schools is facing a number of issues that threaten its fiscal future. They include falling enrollment, physical infrastructure decline, uncertain funding from Lansing, and escalating retirement costs.
“Developing a strategic plan offers BHS an opportunity to address the impact of this decline on its stakeholders, and an opportunity to create a call to action,” said Charles Fleetham. “BHS has the unique problem of having succeeded so thoroughly for so long, that the community suffers from disbelief. Conquering that disbelief and overcoming psychological resistance to change will be a key part of our strategic planning process.”
