BHS announces administrative appointments Print
ImageThe Bloomfield Hills Schools Board of Education has approved the following administrative appointments:

Cindi Hopkins and Laurie McCarty are the new assistant superintendents of instruction, from executive directors of instruction.

Cindi has been with the District since 1975 when she was hired to teach math at East Hills Middle School. She has been a math teacher and assistant principal at Andover, and led the District through the technology boom as director of information services from 1983 to 2006, when she was appointed executive director of instruction. She holds a bachelor’s degree in math from the University of Michigan, a master’s degree in math education from U-M, and has worked toward her Ed. Specialist degree at Wayne State University.

“Cindi brings out the best in people,” said Dr. Steven Gaynor, superintendent. “She empowers others to take on challenges and explore ideas. Her enthusiasm for education has never wavered. Though her job and titles have changed, Cindi has always asked the most important question . . . ‘Well, what’s best for the kids?’”

Laurie joined BHS in 1979 and taught at Conant, Pine Lake and Lone Pine elementaries. She spent 13 years as principal at Lone Pine before being promoted to director of instruction. She was named an executive director of instruction in 2006. Laurie has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Eastern Michigan University.

"Laurie has done exemplary work as a member of our instructional team, leading the District in curriculum development, professional development, and instructional initiatives,” said Dr. Gaynor.

Rob Durecka to principal of Andover High School. Rob is currently associate principal at Lahser High School, and his appointment follows Heidi Kattula’s transfer to the principal position at West Hills Middle School.

“Rob is an experienced administrator, highly focused on students, and brings a variety of leadership experiences in education, in the private sector and in the military,” said Dr. Gaynor. “He has provided exceptional leadership at Lahser with the African American Achievement Network that has made great progress in improving achievement for our minority students, and his leadership has extended outside of Lahser through his active involvement in the Birmingham Bloomfield Community Coalition and as chair of the Social Norms Committee.”

Rob was principal of Central Middle School in Port Huron, a position he held prior to joining BHS in September 2005. Additionally, he served as assistant principal of Port Huron High School for five years and taught high school social studies for four years at Port Huron Northern. Rob holds a bachelor’s degree in public law and government from Eastern Michigan University, a master of arts in teaching from Wayne State University and completed the educational leadership specialist program also at Wayne State.

Heidi Kattula to principal at West Hills Middle School, succeeding Ed Bretzlaff. She joined BHS in July 2003 as principal of Andover High School.

“Andover’s decision to become a candidate for the MYP of the International Baccalaureate required strong leadership and gentle guidance, and Heidi masterfully led her staff to full authorization as an MYP school. Her experience with the process and the program will be an asset to the staff at West Hills,” said Dr. Gaynor.

Heidi has a comprehensive background in secondary education and came to BHS from an assistant principal position at Wayne Memorial High School. Her educational achievements include a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Michigan, a master’s degree in educational administration and supervision from Northern Michigan University and a specialist’s in general administration from Wayne State University.

Chris Delgado to principal at East Hills Middle School, succeeding Arnold Jahnke, who is relocating to a new position in Colorado.

Chris joined BHS in October 2003 as associate principal of Andover High School. “Chris has made a positive and lasting impression on students, parents, teachers and his fellow administrators,” said Dr. Gaynor. Chris served as the NCA co-chair at Andover and successfully led the school to renewal of its NCA accreditation. Most recently, he helped guide the staff in implementing the International Baccalaureate MYP and achieving full authorization as an MYP school. Chris’ leadership has extended outside of Andover to the Learning Achievement Coalition Oakland, created initially through the Oakland County Superintendents’ Association, which focuses on minority student achievement. Chris also is vice president of the Birmingham Bloomfield Community Coalition board of directors.

He came to BHS from Seaholm High School in Birmingham, where he was employed as a grades 9-12 Spanish teacher and served as freshman class advisor, student government, and he served on the technology and NCA career development committees. His prior teaching experiences include six years in the Colorado Springs district where he worked as a middle and high school teacher and varsity soccer coach. Chris holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Michigan State University.

Ed Bretzlaff to the new position of director of instruction, from principal at West Hills Middle School.

Ed has been with the District since 1975. His experience includes teacher, coach, athletic director, counselor/supervisor and assistant principal at West Hills Middle School; counselor/supervisor at Lahser High School; assistant principal at Bloomfield Hills Middle School; and principal, since 1994, at West Hills Middle School.

“With Ed’s long tenure in BHS, his knowledge of District culture and understanding of the changes we’ll need to make in the future, along with a good understanding of the realities we face in finance and enrollment, we believe he is excellent for this position and a good match with the instructional services department,” said Dr. Gaynor. “He has been an excellent instructional leader and his oversight and leadership throughout the adoption of the IB Middle Years Programme at West Hills was masterful.”

Ed has bachelor’s degrees from Oakland University in biology, chemistry and physics, and earned his M.A. in curriculum and instruction from Michigan State University. In addition, he has done post-graduate work at MSU in counseling and administration.

Christine DiPilato to associate principal of Lahser High School.

Christine brings to Lahser a rich educational background and a variety of leadership experiences in education. She is currently assistant principal of curriculum, instruction and assessment at Swampscott High School in Massachusetts, a position she has held since 2006. She was employed by The Latin School of Chicago as an upper school English teacher from 2002-2005, and was a resident director from 2001-2004 in the college preparation program at Northwestern University.

Her educational background includes a B.A. in communications from Michigan State University, a master’s in education and social policy from Northwestern University and a master’s of education from Harvard University.

“Christine is impressive, with a warm personality, good sense of humor and a strong desire to work as a school administrator in Michigan. I believe that she will be a good match for the students and staff at Lahser High School. She possesses all of the necessary leadership and interpersonal skills to be successful as an associate principal,” said Dr. Gaynor.
