Ten-year strategic plan to guide Bloomfield Hills Schools Print
ImageA ten-year strategic plan formed after eight months of involvement by about 250 community members has been accepted by the Bloomfield Hills Schools Board of Education.

Our Call to Action: Become a National Lighthouse District by 2018 lays out an ambitious goal for one of Michigan’s leading school districts: to become nationally-acknowledged for the finest comprehensive curriculum and instruction.

The strategic plan resulted from a detailed process that was facilitated by Project Innovations in Farmington Hills, including dozens of stakeholder meetings, focus groups and individual interviews. Project Innovations also worked with consulting partners Anderson Economic Group of Lansing; Wade-Trim of Livonia; and Michigan State University teacher education faculty members.

The strategic plan sets four strategic objectives for Bloomfield Hills Schools: to build a superior partnership with the community; to create and implement a national “lighthouse” curriculum; to sustain financial success in a downturn; and to build and maintain “lighthouse” facilities.

“The plan presents a powerful statement that over the next ten years Bloomfield Hills Schools will enhance its national reputation for the finest comprehensive curriculum and instruction,” said Dr. Steven Gaynor, superintendent. “Moreover, the plan asks us to surpass our own current best efforts to implant best and innovative practices while fostering an atmosphere of trust with our community.”

According to the plan, BHS will foster student success by setting aggressive achievement targets and encouraging quality teaching staff. The plan also commits the district to educating each child to his or her full potential, to eliminating achievement gaps between majority and minority students and to guiding students to become leaders.

The plan also partners Bloomfield Hills Schools with leading experts in the pursuit of a national lighthouse curriculum – meaning one that is acclaimed and duplicated by others for its depth and breadth -- and calls upon the district to create a learning network of the best public school districts in the nation. It drives more collaborative teaching and technology into the curriculum to educate students to become leaders in a new flat world.

And finally, the plan preserves BHS’ strengths by supporting the expansive and exceptional core curriculum that has powered the district over the years.

The strategic plan is viewable on the Bloomfield Hills Schools web site at www.bloomfield.org. A copy of the executive summary can be obtained by phoning the community relations department at 248-341-5424.

Bloomfield Hills Schools inspires nearly 6,000 children with academic, athletic, fine arts and co-curricular opportunities. Students access many learning choices including 26 high school Advanced Placement classes, seven world languages and interactive technology in every classroom. Enrollment is open to residents, and non-residents at competitive tuition rates.
