Facilities planning, school consolidation study underway in BHS Print
ImageThe Bloomfield Hills Schools Strategic Plan 2018 facilities goal team has convened with the initial purpose of recommending elementary and middle school consolidation. Members of the Facilities Master Plan Committee met for the first time on Wednesday, Sept. 17.

Elementary and middle school principals, parents, the Bloomfield Hills Education Association representative and representatives of other community organizations make up the team. Several BHS administrators are ex officio members.

The facilities committee will meet frequently until the Nov. 20 Board of Education meeting, where it will present a progress report on its findings and recommendations. The FMP is expected to consider board feedback and present a recommendation at the Dec. 4 board meeting. A final board recommendation is expected on Dec. 18.

Importantly, the committee and board of education will be available on three dates to get community input on consolidation of the district’s facilities. All meetings begin at 7 pm on these dates:

* Monday, Oct. 13 at West Hills Middle School, 2601 Lone Pine, West Bloomfield
* Tuesday, Oct. 21 at East Hills Middle School, 2800 Kensington, Bloomfield Township
* Monday, Oct. 27 at Bloomfield Hills Middle School, 4200 W. Quarton, Bloomfield Township

At the close of the FMP’s Wednesday meeting, members agreed that the gathering had these key outcomes:

1. The committee members organized themselves as a team, identifying roles and responsibilities, team norms and decision-making procedures.

2. Superintendent Steve Gaynor gave the committee its charge: to deliver a recommendation to the Board on December 18th that closes two schools next year and one more in a two year to four year timeframe.

3. The Committee is focusing on elementary and middle school consolidation and won’t be considering Wabeek, the Farm, the Nature Center, or the high schools. However, the committee will consider potential high school sites in its school closing recommendation (information to be provided by the District based on acreage, etc.)

4. The Strategic Plan, declining enrollment, and financial forecasts are the drivers behind this consolidation process.

5. The Committee will tour all elementary and middle schools before making its recommendation to the school board.

Three other goal teams are forming to guide implementation of the strategic plan. Members will be announced shortly for the building community relationships, financial success and Lighthouse curriculum teams.
