 The spring 2007 release of parent e-mail addresses in response to two Michigan Freedom of Information Act requests has resurfaced as a topic of interest in our community. The District’s compliance with the FOIA requests occurred after outside legal counsel said we were obligated to release the information.
We are pleased to report, however, that a new court ruling has since changed the legal landscape on FOIA for this kind of information. A Michigan Supreme Court decision on July 16, 2008 has reversed our attorneys’ advice on the matter. BHS will immediately begin protecting parent e-mail addresses from outside release, and it is the Board’s intent to develop policy on the matter.
