Facilities Goal Team to give progress report on school consolidation Print
ImageThe Facilities Master Planning Goal Team will provide a progress report on school consolidation to the Bloomfield Hills Schools Board of Education at its Thursday, Nov. 20 meeting. To accommodate an expected large turnout and interest in Public Comment, the meeting has been moved to West Hills Middle School, 2601 Lone Pine Road in West Bloomfield Township. The meeting will begin an hour earlier than usual, at 6 p.m.

In addition, the Board of Education meeting scheduled for Dec. 4 has been moved to Lahser High School and the meeting set for Dec. 18 to Andover High School, both starting at 7 p.m. The new locations will accommodate larger than usual audiences during the school consolidation discussions.

Meanwhile, the District's web site at www.bloomfield.org has been substantially updated with new responses to frequently asked questions, a video on why the district is consolidating schools, a district timeline, and an archive of the data that has been given to the goal team for its consideration. Community members can provide input to the goal team via a web site comments box. All the information can be found by clicking on the "Strategic Planning 2018" icon at the top of the home page.

Administrators, board and goal team members heard many thoughts and suggestions from the community at three board study sessions in October. In addition, nearly 100 comments have been submitted on the district's web site, and board members and administrators have received numerous e-mails on school consolidation. Themes have included slowing down the process and including the high schools in the planning.

Consequently, Board President Mary Ellen Miller spoke to the goal team on Nov. 6 to advise the group that it would have more time to make a decision if it could not make a recommendation in December. The goal team's consensus was that a decision is possible in the December timeframe.

In addition, the goal team is including the high schools in its decision matrix as far as the high schools impact K-8 school configurations. What the team is not discussing at this time is renovation or rebuilding of the current facilities, or the possibility of consolidating the high schools.
