High School MME Scores See Dramatic Rise in BHS Print
MME scores for 2006-2007 high school juniors at Andover and Lahser rose substantially over the previous year’s results, according to data released today from the Michigan Department of Education.

Bloomfield Hills Schools’ scores rose on every portion of the test and outpaced the stable outcomes seen in average Oakland County results. “We’re proud that we could counter the trend and show genuine gains on our scores,” said Dr. Steven Gaynor, Bloomfield Hills Schools superintendent. “However, we will continue our work to improve student achievement.”

The scores comprise one aspect of the new Michigan Merit Exam, which by law replaced the former MEAP exam at the high school level, and for the first time included the ACT exam. About 100,000 high school juniors took the exam in March 2007.

Significant gains for Bloomfield Hills Schools students were seen in science, where Lahser juniors climbed 12 percentage points to 79 percent proficient over 67 percent previously, and Andover students rose four points to 80 percent proficient. In the writing portion, Lahser students moved 15 points from 59 percent proficient to 74 percent proficient, and Andover students moved 12 points from 70 percent to 82 percent proficient. Students also performed well in English language arts, where Lahser students jumped from 72 percent previously to 79 percent proficient, and Andover students gained six points to 82 percent proficient.

Reading at both schools improved slightly, with scores rising from 80 to 81 percent proficient at Andover, and from 79 to 81 percent proficient at Lahser.

In math, Lahser students rose ten points from 65 percent previously to 75 percent proficient, and Andover students rose three points to 77 percent proficient. Social studies results were outstanding at both schools, with 95 percent of Lahser students earning a proficient rating from 85 percent previously, and 89 percent of Andover students earning a proficient result from 87 percent previously.

Though delighted with the report, Dr. Gaynor cautioned that test scores are only one measure of student achievement.

“MME is part of our teaching responsibility, but not our entire responsibility. We teach the whole child and not just to improve MME scores,” he said.
