Carol F. Stencel Ph.D. of Bloomfield Township has been contributing to the advancement of education since she began her career as a high school teacher in Detroit in 1955. After moving to Bloomfield in 1961, she began
at Oakland University as professor of business management in 1962. Dr. Stencel was the first Dean of the
Business and Professional Institute at Oakland Community College, an initiative that served the educational
needs of businesses in Oakland County beginning in 1983. She retired from that position in l995.
She served as a consultant to North Central Association Schools of Higher Education evaluating schools for
accreditation, served as a Commissioner-at-large, chaired a number of evaluation teams in the 19 states, and
served on Oakland County committees dealing with coordinated curriculums in technical education. Dr. Stencel
served as chairperson of the Curriculum and Instruction Committee, Chairperson of the OCC Academic Senate,
and a member of the Executive Director's Council of the Michigan Association of Higher Education. She was
a visiting Professor at Michigan State University and has presented at State and National education conferences.
Dr. Stencel was president of the Michigan Business Education Association and has the distinction of being the
first woman to have been offered a fellowship to teach economics at the University of Detroit in 1955. She was
a member of the Oakland Leadership II Class. She holds a bachelor of science in business education/business
administration from the University of Detroit; a master of arts in business education from the University of Michigan; a master of business administration/advanced management and a doctor of philosophy from Michigan State University. She and her husband, John, have three sons who graduated from Bloomfield Hills Schools and
ten grandchildren, three of which presently attend Bloomfield Hills Schools.
