Last year, I read the book Mindset by Dr. Carol Dweck. As a parent and educator, this book really resonated with me. Dr. Carol Dweck, a psychologist from Stanford University, has researched achievement and success in the areas of education, business and sports for several years. Interestingly, she found that one very simple thing, one's 'mindset' made the biggest difference in how someone was able to self-motivate and achieve success. Dweck identified two different types of mindsets: 'growth' and 'fixed'.

We want to learn to praise in ways that help children develop a strong internal sense of self esteem. Praise has two parts. The first is the words that are actually spoken. The second is the way it affects the person who receives it. Praise should be genuine, appreciative and descriptive. By being appreciative and descriptive you leave the evaluation piece to the child. They can draw their own conclusions about the job they did and formulate in their own mind keeping your words as a springboard.

In honor of the Bloomfield Hills High School Class of 2014, I would like to share a story from a few weeks ago, when my husband had an unexpected encounter on his way to a medical conference. Due to bad weather and a consequently delayed flight, my husband spent three extra hours waiting at Detroit Metro Airport. As he passed the time away fiddling with his iPhone, his ears perked up when he overheard a conversation happening behind him. He heard two men reminiscing about streets, restaurants, and other places that my husband recognized all too well. Out of curiosity, my husband turned around and the three of them made eye contact.

The Family Sign Language Program in Bloomfield Hills Schools has been open to the public for over twenty-five years. We began this program to encourage family and friends to learn and communicate in sign language with our Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. At present, we have approximately 100 Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in our program spanning from Early Intervention through High School.

The Bionic Black Hawks Robotic Team is a proud member of the F.I.R.S.T. (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotic Community, which was founded by Dean Kamen, a world-renown inventor and entrepreneur. The Bionic Black Hawks combines the excitement of a varsity sport with an actual robot as the object of the game. Students receive hands-on training from adult mentors who help team members discover how rewarding a career in engineering or technology can be.

As a result of the recent news reports regarding prayer on the football field, there seems to be a fundamental misunderstanding of what is and is not allowed in our public schools. Public schools are, by definition, schools that are maintained at public expense for the education of the children of a community. The students who attend our district are incredibly diverse, representing over 60 languages spoken and a wide range of ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds. We celebrate these differences with culture fairs, extensive world language programs, and a plethora of other activities which allow our students to develop a rich community of understanding and friendship.
