Congratulations to Vanessa Rose and Margaret Schultz, honored on May 4, 2017, as new members of the Diversity Champion Honor Roll.
Vanessa Rose, English teacher and assistant Boys Varsity Basketball Coach at Bloomfield Hills High School, represents the best of Bloomfield Hills Schools. As a tremendous classroom teacher, Vanessa builds a culture centered on student voice and the recognition of the diversity that student voice allows. As a woman coach for a boys' basketball team, Vanessa is a trailblazer who garners the respect of the boys on the team and coaches who come to know and value her knowledge of the game. In addition, Vanessa serves as a highly valued member of the team that facilitates our Institute for Healing Racism.
Margaret Schultz's career as a teacher and associate principal is defined by her passion for promoting and supporting programs of equity and inclusion. Her "students first" approach was evident as she successfully led efforts to build an inclusive culture in our new high school. She has trained staff in restorative practices to build community within classrooms and throughout the school. Margaret has also trained high school students to lead and mentor middle school students in discussions regarding equity and inclusion. Her focus is on what is best for students and that every student has an equal chance for success.
