Dear Bloomfield Hills Schools Families,
As we head into fall, I am deeply thankful for our community, teachers, essential workers, administrators, support staff, community partners, families, and many others who have given their time, talents, and collective energy to creating innovative plans for our fall return to school.
As a school community, we have conducted research, visiting schools virtually all over the world to hear about their experiences and insight, and consulted with medical professionals both inside and around our community. I would like to thank the hundreds of individuals who have been working nonstop to consider every safety measure, teaching model, and scenario that may impact our students, staff, and families this fall. I would also like to thank the thousands of students and families who have provided feedback as we have worked through various possibilities for the fall. This feedback was critical to creating the plan that the Board will review next week.
This summer, Governor Gretchen Whitmer unveiled the MI Safe Start Plan, a guide outlining the phasing structure to support Michiganders as we progress through the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, on June 30, a MI Safe Schools: 2020-21 Return to School Roadmap was provided to guide educators as they develop their own return to school plans based on each of the phases from the MI Safe Start Plan. With guidance from the Oakland County Health Department, we will share our plan with the community after the Board of Education meeting on August 6, 2020.
At this time, we would like to share some important updates.
We remain committed to providing the rigorous education our students and families expect from Bloomfield Hills Schools, while also ensuring families have the ability to choose the learning setting that is right for their family. The choice of education setting for the fall is a very personal one as families are each grappling with unique challenges and circumstances.

Understandably, many families have questions regarding next school year and what in-person teaching and learning will look like in the fall. Next week, following the August 6th Board of Education meeting, we will share the full return to school plan, the Bloomfield Hills Schools Blueprint, with families.
While the plans will be comprehensive, they will also maintain the flexibility necessary to ensure we continue to accommodate the unique needs of our students, families, and staff. We are committed to supporting our Bloomfield Hills Schools community through this coming school year and are confident in our talented and dedicated teachers and their ability to support students instructionally and emotionally through this coming fall, regardless of where the student chooses to learn.
Please bookmark our Blueprint website as an ongoing resource for your family. We will continue to update the website as more information becomes available and decisions are made. We are leading with our students’ best interests in mind and appreciate your patience as we are committed to making decisions thoughtfully and collaboratively.
It is our goal to ensure equitable access to education for all our students while continuing to maintain a safe and healthy environment for everyone in our school community. I know that by continuing to work as one Bloomfield Hills Schools team, we can continue to show our students the care and support they need.
Pat Watson, Superintendent
