Alumnus Dion A. Johnson Reflects on Community and Resilience in Debut Book "Revolutionary Vision Blvd."

Nurture, resilience, and lifelong friendships are at the heart of author and Bloomfield Hills Schools alumnus Dion A. Johnson's first book, "Revolutionary Vision Blvd." A graduate of Lahser High School, class of 1989, Johnson recounts the powerful stories of growing up in a community with caring neighbors and teachers who made a difference in his life.

Johnson’s journey began in school, where he developed a passion for writing by contributing to the school newspaper and yearbook. These early experiences sparked a lifelong love for storytelling. He went on to study journalism, aiming to work in a Detroit marketing firm, but detoured from the original goal to become a successful barber servicing local sports heroes and neighborhood kids in Pontiac. Inspiration struck when, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Johnson read a book titled, The Encore Career. This prompted the future author to reflect on his prior passion for reading and writing, and he began to recall the stories from his youth.

Initially, Johnson thought he might write about his career as a barber, however, after reflecting on his experiences growing up in a close-knit community, Johnson felt compelled to tell a broader story that encompassed his neighborhood, family, friends, and the magical relationships that defined his upbringing. The resulting book, published in 2024, is a firsthand account of the joys of childhood, growing up, and the love and camaraderie shared among neighbors. The nonfiction book tells the tales of growing up on Bloomfield Blvd. and features reminiscent pictures of life on the boulevard. It’s a nostalgic tale of riding bikes, making up games, and playing outside until the streetlights came on. He also recounts the support from his parents, who instilled values of perseverance and respect. His mother’s experiences as an educator and his father’s experience working at an automotive assembly plant fostered strong values and an environment that shaped his identity.

Bloomfield Hills Schools played a pivotal role in the author's life, providing the backdrop for challenge and personal growth. Johnson attended Hickory Grove Elementary, East Hills Middle School, and Lahser High School. The author fondly remembers the many comforting and supportive teachers, coaches, and classmates who contributed to a positive educational experience.

When Johnson became a parent, his family chose to raise their children in the same environment, believing in the values and opportunities that Bloomfield Hills Schools offer. Johnson’s daughter, Whitney, proudly graduated as part of the final class at Lahser High School in 2013, while Johnson’s son, Myles, graduated from BHHS in 2017.

Johnson recently held a book talk and signing at the Bloomfield Township Public Library. He recalled, “That evening was really powerful. Some of my coaches and some classmates I haven’t seen since high school were there; it was a room full of love.” Johnson is currently working on his second book, which will chronicle his success as a barber. He is also scheduling additional book talks.

The author’s journey as both a writer and a community member reflects a deep connection to Bloomfield Hills Schools. Johnson’s experiences highlight the profound impact of a supportive community and educational environment on shaping an individual. Read more about former Lahser Knight, Dion A.
