BHHS student, Kanata Richardson, Wins National Championship!

Bloomfield Hills Schools proudly congratulates grade 12 student, Kanata Richardson! Richardson impressively claimed the Girls National Wrestling Championship in the 190-pound weight class! The competition took place in Iowa on Saturday, March 14.

The weekend prior to this national victory, Richardson competed in the state championship tournament, earning 2nd place. Although disappointed with the result after having won the 2025 state title, Richardson did not dwell on the loss. “This taught me that I am not an exception to losses. There's always somebody that's coming for your spot,” explained Richardson. “I realized, okay, here's this next opportunity for me to do something that I love! I've experienced what it's like to be at the top of something and to have that taken from you. And so now, here's my opportunity to wrestle freely, to have fun, to just enjoy it!”

Richardson credits success to self-confidence, intense training, faith, and supportive coaches. Richardson shares a unique bond with the coaches. Head coach Tony Scigliano believed in Richardson from day one. “She’s the greatest wrestler I have ever coached and I’m going to miss having her on my team,” said Coach Scigliano. Richardson shared, “[Coach] has just been absolutely amazing, he taught me how to be strong and confident and courageous, and not to have anything hold me back.”

Looking ahead, Richardson is excited to continue a wrestling career at Northern Michigan University, where she will attend on athletic scholarship. Richardson’s determination and resilience will ensure a promising future in collegiate athletics.
