The team is led by veteran Head Coach Greg Burks and Assistant Coach Nick Tolomei. Burks realized the team would look different this season since seven starters graduated last year. It was a learning experience to navigate so many new players in the lineup, but this only led to success. Burks noted, “Every team we played this year was very good... Every team had solid flights so we had to be on every time we stepped foot on the court… [the players’] games improved, their mentality, and their ability to handle big moments improved substantially by the end.” BHS Athletic Director, Mike Cowdrey commented, “Coach Burks does a great job of putting our athletes in great positions to be successful while instilling confidence in them. Ultimately, he is a master of setting a lineup and trusting the athletes to go compete and win.”

Black Hawk senior student athlete Asher Langwell was a key contributor on the winning team. Langwell prepares for competition by practicing daily and participating in tournaments during the off season. Langwell proudly expressed, “The Black Hawk team is one of the greatest teams I have ever been on. We are all very close and have been playing tennis together for a long time. We root for each other and celebrate each other's successes and help each other through the tough matches. When you are ranked #1, there is a lot of pressure to win states and being a part of this team has taught me how to perform under pressure.”

Capping off a weekend of hard work, determination, and excitement, the team celebrated their victory at the end-of-season banquet. Coach Burks remarked, “All the kids were drained, physically and mentally, but we had our banquet of golf and dinner which was great!” The championship team will be recognized at an upcoming Board of Education meeting. Congratulations to the team on becoming “THREE-PEAT” State Champions!
