Carter Canfield Scores Scholarship Offer
Grade 10 Bloomfield Hills High School student athlete, Carter Canfield, received an unusual offer. The Indiana Tech Warriors verbally offered Canfield a scholarship to play on their basketball team after high school. It's uncommon for sophomore players to receive scholarship offers.
Canfield picked up his first basketball before he could walk. Canfield’s father and two older brothers all lived and breathed the sport from a young age. After briefly trying out lacrosse and flag football, Canfield ultimately knew basketball was the right choice. The family grew up with dad coaching and the boys training and playing on travel and school teams all year long. Canfield’s brothers both played basketball for the Black Hawks and were recruited by college teams. Mason Canfield, class of 2021, currently plays for Concordia University Ann Arbor, while Tyler Canfield, class of 2018, played at Indiana Tech.
Canfield dedicates nearly every moment of the day to thinking about, playing, or training for basketball! The athlete enjoys playing on a team, crediting his teammates for helping to keep spirits up after a bad play or a loss. Uniquely, the Black Hawks varsity basketball coach is also Canfield’s father. Coach Brian Canfield is proud of the player’s contributions, “Carter approaches the game with a certain confidence where he always competes and plays to win. He wants to take the big shot late in the fourth quarter. There isn’t a moment that is too big for him. He carries a winning attitude with him.”
While Canfield is not sure where he will matriculate, Indiana Tech is at the top of the list. Knowing a spot on the team is being saved, Canfield can focus on playing well for the Black Hawks and enjoying high school life. Coach Canfield commented, “With the transfer portal, NIL, and revisions to eligibility timelines, this is an extremely difficult time for high school students to earn a college scholarship. It is harder than ever before. The fact that Carter obtained an offer as a sophomore is a surprise and truly remarkable.”
