The 2025 fall season for the BHHS girls varsity volleyball team, composed of fifteen players from grades 9 through 12, was nothing short of historic. This team powered through an incredible season, won the District Championship, swept the Regional Championship, and earned runner-up honors at the Division 1 State Championship with an impressive overall season record of 43-7-1.

Beyond their deep on-court talent, the athletes exhibited outstanding teamwork, camaraderie, and trust. Team captains, Kayla Nwabueze (IA, grade 12) and Brynn Wilcox (BHHS, grade 11) promoted these values at each practice and match. Head coach Brian Kim shared, “[A] unique thing about this team is how the players put the team first over their individual needs.” As a new addition to the BHHS coaching staff this year, Kim prioritized building trust and empowered the players to make their own decisions on the court.

The team's cohesiveness was key to their success. This was evident in their enjoyment of time spent together. Charlotte Elowsky (BHHS, grade 11) commented, “I love [seeing teammates] in the halls…before practice, even after practice has always been a blast.” Emily Nwabueze (IA, grade 9) added, “The bus rides are really fun, getting hyped, and going to the games.” Suri Ewing (BHHS, grade 9) agreed, “The bus runs are really fun after a game, [we] talk, and get to know each other more.” Alyssa Moir (BHHS, grade 11) fondly recalled dance breaks, watching film together, and of course, their winning moments, sharing, “My favorite memory was when we won against Rockford because they were the team to beat!”

In addition to setting new school records, Captain Kayla Nwabueze committed to studying and playing volleyball at Harvard University, with aspirations of becoming an orthopedic surgeon. Kayla learned life lessons on the court. “I learned that you can't do things alone: you really have to rely on and have trust in other people, because they help you along the way. I feel like the reason we went so far this season was because we really bonded together as a team,” explained Nwabueze.

Coach Kim was humbled to win the title of The Detroit News Volleyball Coach of the Year. Recognizing it was a team effort, Kim expressed, “It's really a reflection of the team, of the players, and everything that they have done and contributed and sacrificed for the team…this award really goes towards the team and the players.” Congratulations on an amazing season, Black Hawks!
