A Peek Into the Classroom: Escape Room Adventure in Room 11

A Peek Into the Classroom: Escape Room Adventure in Room 11

“Who is ready for the escape room?” said Meghan Dallavecchia, lead teacher at Wing Lake Development Center. Students in room 11 were about to embark on an exciting escape room challenge. Their previous lessons revolved around the book, Jumanji, delving into various book elements, literacy skills, animal art projects, and engaging in related games. The time had now come for their thrilling escape mission!

Dallavecchia crafted a slideshow featuring clues to solve questions about daily life to kick off the activity. "We have 20 minutes to solve all the problems," Dallavecchia announced. In this class, students who range in age from 18-24 years, are non-verbal communicators who utilize their personal devices to select answers and make choices. The devices involve eye-tracking technology to assist the students in choosing answers by tracking their gaze. After reading the clues aloud, Dallavecchia moved around the classroom, while instructional aides Brittney and Allison assisted the students. "Watch out for the hippos in the swamp that bite, to get the next clue, what is something you do at night," read Dallavecchia. One student spelled the word "eye" on his device, to which Dallavecchia replied, "Yes, we do close our eyes at night." Another student chose a washcloth, which led to discussions about washing up at night. Each staff member vocalized the answers given by the students, sparking conversations about each student response.

Personal connections were established through discussions about students' families, pets, and daily routines. Staff members provided feedback on answers, fostering connections and asking additional questions. At times, staff aided students in navigating their screens, assisting them in locating home pages. Positive reinforcement is evident throughout the lesson, with teachers posing follow-up questions and offering reassurance. Smiles spread across the room as the students solved all five clues and successfully escaped! One student joyfully shared, "I am happy."
