Announcing 2025 National Merit Semifinalists and Commended Students

Bloomfield Hills Schools is proud to congratulate two grade 12 students from Bloomfield Hills High School and two grade 12 students from the International Academy who received Semifinalist status from the National Merit Scholarship Program. In addition, nine BHHS students and six IA students received commendations from the organization.

In each annual National Merit Scholarship Program, about 50,000 academically talented high school students are honored, but only about 16,000 of them are named Semifinalists. The 2024 PSAT/NMSQT served as an initial screen of over 1.3 million entrants to the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program. Semifinalists are the highest scorers in each of the 50 states and represent less than one percent of each state’s high school seniors. Although Semifinalist qualifying scores vary from one state to another, the scores of all Semifinalists are extremely high.

Dr. Dan Hartley, BHHS Principal, noted that the students who earn this high achievement exemplify excellence beyond the classroom with leadership roles, community service, and a commitment to making a positive impact on every area of their lives. These students’ ability to balance rigorous academics with meaningful involvement in school and community speaks to their character, work ethic, and perseverance.

More than two-thirds (about 34,000) of the PSAT/NMSQT high scorers are designated Commended Students. NMSC recognizes their outstanding ability and potential for academic success in college. Although Commended Students will not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, some may be candidates for special scholarships offered by corporate sponsors.
