Athletic Highlights

While most athletic teams at Bloomfield Hills High School are practicing hard and looking for wins, the Girls Basketball Team also did some goal setting and soul searching as part of a team-building exercise led by Director of Athletics Mike Cowdrey. The team considered questions such as “Why do we play basketball?,” “What do we want out of our season?,” and “What are the responsibilities of the coaches/players?”

All BHHS students are invited to participate in free after school weight room training, whether they are athletes out of season or someone just looking to gain additional fitness. A professional strength and conditioning coach from 2SP is available every day from 2:50 p.m. to 4:20 p.m. to guide students through specialized or generalized workouts. Joe Neal, Director of Athlete Performance at 2SP Sports, notes that the coaches believe that fitness, injury pre-habilitation, and peak athletic performance are built from the ground up through functional, movement-based training. In order to make that happen, 2SP utilizes proven exercise, consistent training methodology, and proper equipment to strengthen the core, balance the musculoskeletal system, and improve upon the fundamental aspects of human movement. “We will motivate you and make sure that you adhere to your performance goals,” said Neal.

Girls Varsity Basketball Sets Goals for Season
Athletic teams at Bloomfield Hills High School are practicing hard and looking for wins. This week, the Girls Varsity Basketball Team also did some goal setting and soul searching as part of a team-building exercise led by BHS Director of Athletics Mike Cowdrey. The team considered questions such as “Why do we play basketball?,” “What do we want out of our season?,” and “What are the responsibilities of the coaches/players?”

The players first talked about why they played, almost unanimously saying that they love the game and their teammates. Some also talked about the fun they have playing and the competitive atmosphere. “Even when I’m doing something terrible like running, I like doing it with my friends on the team,” said one player. “I’m an introvert. When I’m around the people on this team I can be more like myself,” said another.

Head Coach Kristen Massey told the team, “When I was playing in college, my role changed a lot. My coach told me that just because the role is different doesn’t mean that it is lesser than. I think each person on this team needs to take pride in that role and do it to the best of their ability.”

The team also discussed how they wanted to be a next level, more committed, more serious team. Director Cowdrey challenged the team to define what that meant. “If we are serious, and a next-level team, what does that mean for our position in the conference?,” Cowdrey asked. “Are you willing to get up at 5 a.m. and lift weights? Do you want to make up terrible things about your opponents like Michael Jordan did? What do you want to get out of it? Who wants a scholarship? What does the whole team want?” The team then agreed they all want to win, and that when they hand in their jerseys they want to have at least 14 wins and be able to say their season was successful.

By the end of the meeting, the team had completed a draft and planned to get together next week to finalize their mission statement.
