BHHS Theatre Troupe Takes “Mamma Mia!” to the Stage

BHHS Theatre Troupe Takes “Mamma Mia!” to the Stage

The BHHS theatre department performed their second musical of the year, performing “Mamma Mia!”, complete with sequins, boas, fun dance numbers, and the iconic music of ABBA. Cast primarily of students enrolled in the theatre 3 class, this production had everyone involved! Each audience “guest” member received a party favor bag with glow lights, mini tambourines, and disco ball necklaces. They swayed and played with the cast during the show, and even danced with cast members at the end. Jenna Roumayah (grade 12), who played the lead role of Donna, helped the stage come alive. Roumayah exuberated nothing but joy as she exclaimed, “I was 5 years old when the spark in me ignited and I watched ‘Mamma Mia!’ for the first time. Ever since, ABBA has been playing nonstop in my home. I wish I could see the look on that 5 year old girl's face when I tell her that her dream of playing Donna Sheridan came true.”

This is not the end for “Mamma Mia!”, though, as BHHS’ theatre Troupe 8055 will perform it at the Mid-Michigan Theatre Arts Festival as the comedic studio entry on January 24-25. Over the years this festival has become better known as “Love Fest” because of the celebratory nature of the festival; judges provide feedback, but schools do not compete. BHHS is one of 16 schools selected to attend.

The BHHS theatre troupe will also take the mainstage serious production, “Antigone”, to Love Fest. BHHS’ production sets Sophocles’ “Antigone” in 2025.  Students have trained with professional fight choreographer, Joe Wright, to create safe combat moves that will have the audience at the edge of their seat. Original sound designs as well as professionally recorded cover songs were created to help with the storytelling.

Both “Mamma Mia!” and “Antigone” use the Greek Chorus in a unique and creative way.  Come support the students on February 12 when the BHHS theatre department will perform “Mamma Mia!” at 6:30 p.m. and “Antigone” at 8:00 p.m at Bloomfield Hills High School.

“Mamma Mia!” was student-directed by Luke Vaughn (grade 12) and choreographed by BHHS math teacher, Suzanne DeAngelis.  Both shows were produced by theatre teacher Mary Bogrette and technical director Marty Yaple.
