BHS and BPS Collaborate: Supporting the D/HH Classroom
Seaholm High School’s ASL level 2 class created tactile books for students who are DeafBlind in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing program in Bloomfield Hills Schools. Seaholm students received a Seaholm PTA grant in order to make the books. Supplies were brought in from the dollar store and other locations to create a 10-12 page book based on a topic of the students’ choice. Seaholm students have been creating books since 2019 and plan to do so in the future in collaboration with Bloomfield’s D/HH program. Tactile books allow stories to come to life for students who are DeafBlind. Students also created interactive pages and story bags to go along with their stories, so students could interact with the book as well. One of the favorite parts of this project is coming up with different tactile items for certain concepts. One book in particular was about making a pizza. Students used balloons and filled it with putty to represent rolling the pizza dough, which was so unique! 23 books were donated overall.
