Bloomfield Hills Schools Annual Tradition of Make A Difference Day Kicks Off

Each October, Bloomfield Hills Schools partners with a local organization to celebrate the national Make a Difference Day, always on the fourth Saturday of October. This year, on Saturday, October 26, BHS is partnering with Read to a Child, a charity that matches mentors and students for a year-long reading program. Whitman Elementary School in Pontiac hosts a local Read to a Child program, and BHS parent Katie Wolf is their program coordinator. Wolf has observed the need for books to reopen their school library, so this year’s MADD project involves the collection of new and gently used books, the collection of funds, the creation of bookmarks and other items, and the transport of books to Whitman Elementary School.

Students from Kindergarten through grade 12 are encouraged to take part in this powerful community service experience! Sign up here, and volunteer to sort book donations, make bookmarks, and transport items to Whitman Elementary School. High school age students and parents can sign up to move furniture and boxes, and help decorate the space at Whitman, all on Saturday, October 26.

BHS parents/guardians are also encouraged to sign up to help at Whitman Elementary on Fridays leading up to the October 26 community service event, to prepare the space for the books.

Ways to Donate include:

  • DONATE GENTLY USED/NEW BOOKS: These grade K-5 book donations will be collected from community members and stored at each school until the event. Please look for collection boxes at your student’s school in mid-October.

  • AMAZON WISH LIST: This includes book requests as well as small furniture and book accessories. These items will be delivered to the home of the MADD project coordinator.

  • DONATE to the Read to a Child program directly through their website

  • DONATE a portion of your purchase from SCHULER BOOKS online and in store (Gateway Center Plaza: 7260 Orchard Lake Road, in West Bloomfield) the week of 10/27/24-11/2/24. Be sure to mention Bloomfield Hills Schools when shopping in the store during that week. For online shoppers, use coupon code READTOACHILD during checkout. 20% of all purchases made will benefit Read to a Child.

  • DONATE by cash or check (made payable to Read to a Child) - contact your school’s MADD representative to find out where to drop off cash or a check.
