Bloomin' East Students Learn Fire Safety and Meet Local Firefighters

Bloomin’ East students enjoyed an exciting visit from the local fire department! The team from Bloomfield Township Engine 2 engaged with students about fire safety and the importance of dialing 911 during an emergency. The primary focus of the visit was on fire gear and equipment. Firefighters shared that while their gear may appear intimidating, they are there to help. They explained how each piece of equipment is vital for ensuring their safety and effectiveness during rescue missions. For instance, their helmets protect against falling debris, and their protective coats and pants are specifically designed to shield them from fire hazards. Firefighter Maddie took her time putting on her fire gear, frequently reassuring the students with the phrase, “it’s still me,” to help them understand that she was simply dressing in her equipment. “I’m going to wear my mask and use my air to breathe. I might look and sound different, but it’s still me, and I’m here to help,” Maddie explained to the students, who excitedly received high-fives from her while she was in full gear.

Firefighter Maddie also took time to demonstrate the crucial technique of “stop, drop, and roll” in the unlikely case of a student's clothing catching fire. The students were excited to explore the fire truck and discover the various tools and equipment used in emergencies. They were shown the lights and reminded that when the flashing lights and sirens are activated, it indicates an emergency. The firefighters also took the chance to demonstrate some of their essential tools, reiterating that although they might look scary, they are necessary for helping others.

Through this visit, the firefighters aimed not only to educate the students but also to reassure them. They wanted everyone to understand that behind the intimidating gear they are just people committed to saving lives and ensuring the safety of those in need.
