E-Bikes & E-Motos Safety Message

E-Bikes & E-Motos Safety Message

E-motos and electric bikes have become increasingly popular with young people. Communities across our area are experiencing safety concerns as more riders take to streets, sidewalks, and trails. Before we return to school next week, below are some safety tips from the Bloomfield Township Police Department for parents to use in at-home conversations with their children.

  • Slow down on and around school property, especially near pedestrians and vehicles.
  • Follow traffic laws, signs, and signals, and always yield to pedestrians.
  • Know where riding is permitted. Rules for streets, sidewalks, bike paths, and trails vary depending on the type of electric bike.
  • Wear a properly fitted helmet.
  • Understand the difference between an e-bike and an e-moto. Michigan has specific classifications for e-bikes based on motor power and speed. Higher-powered electric motorcycles, or e-motos, are subject to different rules and restrictions. Please see the attached infographic from the OCSO or the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments website for more information on e-bike classifications, rules, and where they can be ridden.

As we prepare to welcome students back next week, we encourage parents and caregivers to talk with their children about these safety considerations and make sure they understand where and how e-bikes and e-motos can be safely operated. School parking lots, sidewalks, crosswalks, and surrounding roads are especially busy during arrival and dismissal, with students, families, staff, and buses moving throughout these areas.

Our goal is to help students understand the rules and make safe choices. A conversation at home before the school year begins can help ensure everyone starts the year with safety in mind.
