Grade-Up Math for BHS Students

Grade-Up Math for BHS Students

Bloomfield Hills Schools is proud to offer advanced mathematics instruction for elementary and middle school students. With the linear development of mathematics, students who demonstrate knowledge and aptitude in mathematics are placed in "grade up" mathematics within their school day, and their school building if possible. Students earn the opportunity for grade-up placement through a combination of i-Ready performance, classroom performance, and successful demonstration of their content knowledge on a spring assessment. Currently, 56 students in Grades 1-4 receive advanced mathematics instruction in our elementary buildings. Additionally, two grade 4 students, and 19 grade 5 students are enrolled in math 6, or pre-algebra at their feeder middle schools, and take a shuttle back to their elementary schools for the remainder of their school day.

In middle school, 24 grade 6 students and 20 grade 7 students are taking a math course at least one level above. As a district, students in grade 8 have the option to take high school algebra I. 67% of our eighth-grade students are enrolled in high school algebra I, with an overall average of 73% of our grade 8 students in high school algebra I or higher. 15 grade 8 students are in pre-AP geometry with statistics, taught at the middle school. This is equivalent to a tenth-grade accelerated course.

Our most accelerated students engage in the advanced mathematics and science program. These middle school students take both advanced mathematics and high school science. This year, there are 5 grade 8 students and 2 grade 7 students in honors algebra 2 and chemistry at BHHS. The district is also supporting two grade 7 students in highly advanced programming, including AP calculus AB and chemistry, and AP calculus BC and pre-AP geometry with statistics.
