Green School Recognition Ceremony Recognizes BHHS and North Hills Middle School

Aligning with the timing of Earth Day, the Detroit Zoo recently hosted the Green School Recognition Ceremony, with more than 200 schools from the tri-county area receiving recognition for their environmental work. Both Bloomfield Hills High and North Hills Middle Schools’ Environmental Clubs were in attendance.

At the event, students were able to explore the zoo and look for endangered and threatened species throughout the park. One of the criteria to gain the Green School certification was to do a fundraiser to support an endangered species. BHHS Environmental Club students hosted a penny war during school lunches to adopt an organism, and collected for two animals: the red panda and polar bear. The red panda won! BHHS students were excited to see a red panda at the zoo. The BHHS Environmental Club is advised by BHHS teachers Angel Bitterman-Wenson and Emily Jones. The North Hills Green Club is advised by Mikhael Reamer.

The Michigan Green School celebration included several speakers, including Representative Haley Stevens, who spoke about climate change legislation that they recently discussed in Washington, D.C. Stevens also declared how proud she was to share with the other representatives that Michigan has a Green Schools program!

Charlie Welham (grade 12) shares, "Making Bloomfield Hills High School a Green School signifies our dedication to making sure we as students are doing our part to make BHHS a sustainable part of the local community. We've been able to inspire our club members and the broader community alike to join us in our environmental efforts through events such as fundraisers, information campaigns, and helping our own local Johnson Nature Center. As co-presidents, Fiona and I are extremely happy that our hard work this year has allowed BHHS to be recognized as an active member in the fight for environmental sustainability, but we wouldn't have been able to do it without our club sponsors, Mrs. Bitterman-Wenson and Mrs. Jones, and all our club members. They provided us with the space and resources in order to make our Green School certification possible."
