Heritage Day at Way and Conant Elementary
Grade 5 students from Conant and Way Elementary Schools dug into their family histories following a recent field trip to Bowers Farm. At the farm, students explored agricultural life from earlier times and learned how factors like land, climate, and resources shaped lifestyles both then and now. To deepen this connection, the students engaged in a heritage day project aimed at exploring the life of a family member. As part of this initiative, each student interviewed a grandparent, older relative, or family friend through written correspondence, asking them to share insights about their family traditions and heritage. The letters inquired about what life was like when they were ten years old. Some letters traveled as far as Japan and Syria, while others were sent to local grandparents or family members.
The students were curious about various topics, including sports, school routines, homework, chores, and the technology - or absence of it - from those times, as well as long-standing family traditions. The classes celebrated their discoveries about family heritage by sharing an artifact. Examples of these artifacts were cherished family recipes, traditional games, cultural toys that could be easily demonstrated, and old family photographs.
The students took great pride in presenting their artifacts, each item sparking conversations and stories that brought their family histories to life. Teachers noted how this project fostered a deeper understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity, encouraging students to value their unique heritages while finding common ground with their peers. Parents and family members were invited to a special Heritage Day celebration, where students proudly displayed their projects and shared what they had learned. This event not only strengthened the bond between the school and families but also inspired many to continue exploring their family stories and traditions beyond the classroom. Through this project, the grade 5 students gained a newfound appreciation for the past, a greater understanding of their identities, and a hopeful outlook for the future, knowing that the stories of those who came before them will continue to guide and inspire them.
