March is Reading Month!

March is Reading Month!

March is Reading Month is an annual literacy celebration with the goal of encouraging students and families to read more and to make reading fun. Bloomfield Hills Schools organizes various activities throughout the month to make reading enjoyable and more of an adventure for its students. Activities can be anything from reading challenges and guest readers to dress up days and library visits. See what some of our schools have done to celebrate reading!

  • Kindergarten students at Conant enjoy guest readers including parents, Officer Jenn, and their grade 5 buddies! They also went on a field trip to the Bloomfield Township Public Library.
  • Grade 2 students at Eastover are participating in a 16-book battle, similar to a March Madness bracket. Students fill out their own brackets prior to the tournament and teachers display a large bracket in the hallway. Students read two books by the same author for each of the eight "battles." After each class votes on which book should go on, the winner is displayed in the hallway.
  • A Lone Pine grade 4 class welcomed retired Lone Pine teachers, Ms. Dickey, Ms. Lockledge, and Ms. Ellison, to read to the class.
  • At Way, students in grade 1 are participating in a 5,000 minute reading challenge. Each week, they track their reading progress by filling out a graph that records the minutes spent reading. Once they achieve their goal, students will enjoy a cozy pajama read-in accompanied by a special treat!
  • Grade 8 students at North Hills were challenged to choose a book they loved and write a book review. These reviews are posted in the grade 6 and 7 hallways as recommendations for new reads.
  • Grade 7 students at South Hills are participating in a “Battle of the Books.” Teachers and staff provide information about the books and book trailers are viewed. To further motivate participation, students have the chance to enter a drawing for a homework pass by reading books!
  • The BHHS Media Center is offering several opportunities to read, talk about books, and win book challenges. There are book giveaways, a “Trivia in the Halls” contest, a chance to “get caught” reading, incentives to check out books, and a library scavenger hunt, complete with hidden secret codes. Prizes will be awarded for each category at the end of the month.
  • Students and staff at Wing Lake are reading tons of books and casting their vote for their favorites.

March is Reading Month is a time period that not only encourages a love for reading and enhancement of literacy skills, but also creates a bond among students, families, and the community through books.
