Mindfulness Matters at Bloomfield Hills Schools

At Bloomfield Hills Schools, supporting students in recognizing and managing their emotions is an essential part of their growth and success. This October, our elementary schools welcomed specialists from Bloomfield Child & Family Counseling into all Developmental Kindergarten through Grade 5 classrooms to lead in-class lessons and activities focused on emotional regulation and fostering a healthy mindset.

Zones of Regulation

The Zones of Regulation framework teaches students to identify, label, and understand different emotional states. The BCFC team reinforced this concept by exploring examples of each zone. The “Green Zone” represents feeling calm, relaxed, and happy, and is ideal for learning and problem-solving. The “Yellow Zone” signals slightly elevated energy, such as excitement or nervousness. The “Red Zone” reflects feelings of anger or frustration, where staying calm and focused becomes challenging. Lastly, the “Blue Zone” includes feelings of sadness or tiredness, which also make learning difficult. Students learned that it’s normal for people to experience multiple zones at once and that friends can react differently to the same situation.

Calming Techniques

To support emotional regulation, students explored a variety of calming strategies. Techniques like deep breathing, drawing, taking a quiet walk, or hugging a loved one can help bring them back to the Green Zone, where problem-solving is easier. The key message was that each person needs to find what works best for them.

Problem vs. Response

A powerful lesson was understanding the importance of matching one’s response to the severity of a problem. Students discussed how minor glitches, like dropping a pencil, require a different reaction than bigger challenges, such as a conflict with a close friend or the loss of a beloved pet. Responding appropriately helps prevent problems from escalating.

Positive Self-Talk

Finally, students practiced boosting their mood through positive self-talk. During an exercise called “Self-Talk Sprinkles,” students wrote down things they like about themselves, fostering self-confidence and resilience.

Thank you to the experts at BCFC who donated their time and resources to improve social emotional awareness across our district. Bloomfield Hills Schools is dedicated to educating every child, knowing that when students are equipped with emotional awareness and healthy coping skills, it creates a stronger, more positive learning environment for all.
