Multilingual International Family Event Hosted by ELD Department

Multilingual International Family Event Hosted by ELD Department

The English Language Development department of Bloomfield Hills Schools supports students who speak a primary language at home other than English, and the nurturing, wonderful group of ELD professionals supports families as well. In early November, to kick off the season of giving, ELD staff coordinated a multilingual family event, hosted at Bloomfield Hills High School, to help families connect, share culture, and learn about area resources. Community members in attendance were invited to wear cultural attire and bring food from their home culture.

Students across all grade levels shared cultural and personal presentations. Two BHHS students from the Chinese National Honor Society shared a traditional legend, the story of Chang’e. A group of Way elementary students shared the powerful poem “A Pilgrim of Today.” A South Hills grade 6 student shared an informative slideshow all about soccer, and three grade 8 students shared personal poems constructed during Language Arts classes. Conant students shared the alphabet in Arabic, presented a slideshow on the culture of Afghanistan, and shared a song in Russian. An Eastover student in grade 2 also shared an Arabic song. These presentations showcased courage and stage presence, as students performed in English, in front of a large audience of peers and community members.

Following presentations, families and staff members enjoyed foods representing the many cultures of our Bloomfield Hills Schools families. The Bloomfield Township Library shared some creative activities and books for younger children in attendance, and BHHS Student Ambassador volunteers assisted with various aspects of the event. Families also received information regarding various community resources, including our Bowers School Farm and Johnson Nature Center, Bloomfield Birmingham Newcomers Club, Bloomfield Youth Assistance, and Bloomfield recreation activities. It was a joyful event to celebrate community and togetherness as the season of giving begins!
