Safe Firearm Storage

Safe Firearm Storage

Secure firearm storage is a school safety issue. That’s why school boards and districts like ours have become partners in promoting the importance of secure gun storage. Three out of every four school shooters acquired their firearm from the home of a parent or close relative. Firearms are the leading cause of death for American children and teens. Please secure your firearms to prevent tragedy.

Not only is it SMART, it is also the law in Michigan. Michigan’s safe storage law, Public Act 17 of 2023, took effect on February 13, 2024. The law applies to all Michigan residents who own firearms. It’s crucial to secure your guns whenever a minor (under 18) is likely to be present in your home, even if they are visiting. This requirement extends to residents and individuals carrying firearms who enter locations where minors may be present.

Under the law, there are two main options for safely storing firearms:

Unloaded and secured with a locking device:

This entails using a locking device such as a trigger lock, cable lock, or any other mechanism that renders the firearm inoperable. By ensuring that the firearm is unloaded and equipped with a locking device, you significantly reduce the risk of unauthorized access and accidents.

Stored in a locked container:

Another option is to store the firearm in a locked container, such as a gun safe, lockbox, or any secure container that prevents unauthorized access. This additional layer of security helps safeguard firearms from falling into the wrong hands, particularly those of curious minors.
