Daring to Care: Larry Irwin Honored by Superintendent West

It’s clear that Larry Irwin makes a lasting impact; not just in their role, but in the way they show up for others every day. Larry Irwin received an impressive 10 nominations for the Dare to Care award, the most of any staff member in Bloomfield Hills Schools.

Here’s what some of Larry’s colleagues had to say:

  • “ Larry is a hall monitor here at North Hills. Earlier this fall, Larry and I were talking about my daughter who is applying to graduate school. About a week ago, he told me about another staff member who has a daughter who recently got a job in the career path my daughter is pursuing. Sometimes we don't have the time to make the connections ourselves...thanks to Larry for making that connection for me” - Lyn Cooper
  • “ Larry used to be a hall monitor at BHHS, and now he is at North Hills Middle School. I LOVED having Larry in the hallway near my classroom because I always knew that he would be there when I needed him. He was excellent at his job and he was always so kind and respectful to everyone - students and other staff. I was bummed when he transferred to North Hills, but yesterday I heard the sweetest story about him. I was talking to a friend who has an 8th grade son at North Hills. Her son did not want to get any gifts for his teachers this year, but he did want to get a gift for Larry the hall monitor. He said that Larry always goes out of his way to say hi and get to know him, asking about his latest basketball game. I think Larry does a great job with the balance of making sure the students are doing what they should be doing, while also being personable and kind to them”.- Lindsey DeLuca
  • “Larry is a great help to everyone at NHMS - not withstanding to us in the Media Center. He's always willing to jump in and help, in fact he shelves books for us every day he has time to do so. He's also such a steady, helpful presence for the kids in the halls; encouraging them to make good choices without being punitive. A great part of the NHMS staff!” - Jill Rilley
