Staff Guidance for E-bikes, E-moto, and E-scooters

Staff Guidance for E-bikes, E-moto, and E-scooters

The Bloomfield Township Board of Trustees enacted a 6-month moratorium for e-bikes and e-scooters on sidewalks and township property at their meeting on September 14, 2026. If a child is found riding an e-bike, e-moto, or e-scooter, the vehicle will be confiscated and returned to the child’s parent or guardian.

Effective on Thursday, September 17, if an e-moto, e-bike, or e-scooter is found on school grounds, they will be confiscated for illegal riders based on the township’s ban. Parents will need to come to their student’s school and pick up the e-bike, e-moto, or e-scooter.

Please note:

  • Staff do not need to attempt to physically stop or chase a student who is riding dangerously. Instead, staff can report the concern to the appropriate administrator, SRO, or Pat.
  • Staff should avoid making assumptions about whether a particular e-bike or e-moto is legal. If there is a question about the device, refer it to the SROs rather than attempting to determine its legal classification.

The Bloomfield Hills Schools Board held an E-Bikes, E-Motos, Electric Scooters & Motorized Mobility Devices on District Property Policy discussion at a special Board of Education meeting on September 11, 2026 at Booth Center. The Board of Education is expected to discuss this policy at the meeting on September 28, 2026 at 6 p.m. at Booth Center (7273 Wing Lake Road).
