Teacher and Ancillary Staff of the Year
Celebrating our Dedicated Staff
The Bloomfield Hills Schools Teacher of the Year and Ancillary Staff of the Year selection and awarding process aims to recognize exceptional educators for their dedication and impact on students' lives. The annual Teacher of the Year Award recognizes an educator at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. The Ancillary Staff of the Year Award recognizes one staff person in the district.
Eligibility
Teacher of the Year Eligibility:
Bloomfield Hills Schools will honor three teachers - one at each level - following the Oakland Schools criteria for their county-wide teacher of the year program, which states:
- Nominees must be certified, full-time teachers in grades Junior Kindergarten through 12.
- Nominees must have a minimum of five full years of classroom teaching experience.
- Ancillary district personnel, such as social workers, counselors or media specialists (unless they are full-time, certified teachers), are not eligible for this award.
Teacher of the Year Nomination Process:
For the 2023-24 school year, each building principal submitted a nomination for a teacher in their school.
- One elementary nomination from each of the four elementary schools principals
- Two middle school nominations from each of our middle schools (principal and associate principal will each submit a nomination)
- Four high school nominations from Bloomfield Hills High School (principal and each associate principal will submit a nomination)

Ancillary Staff of the Year Eligibility:
Bloomfield Hills Schools will honor one ancillary staff in the district per year following the below criteria:
- Nominees must be in an ancillary staff role (social workers, counselors, media specialists, paraprofessionals, secretaries, custodians, etc.)
- Nominees must have a minimum of five full years in K-12 educational setting
Ancillary Staff of the Year Nomination Process:
For the 2023-24 school year, BHS students, staff, and community members will be eligible to submit nominations for Ancillary Staff of the Year using the Ancillary Staff of the Year Nomination Form. The window for nominating an ancillary staff member will be February 1-29, 2024.

Selection Process
- A selection committee will meet to review all nominations, ensure eligibility and nomination criteria has been met, and determine the winners of the Teacher of the Year (elementary, middle school, and high school level) and Ancillary Staff of the Year (one district-wide).
- The selection committee will be composed of a principal from each level, the previous year’s Teacher of the Year and/or Ancillary Staff of the Year, and a variety of district staff.

All names will be redacted and provided to the committee by the communications department to ensure as much anonymity as possible in the selection process.
Announcement
The winners of the BHS Teacher of the Year and Ancillary Staff of the Year will be recognized district-wide.

Board Recognition (Students, Staff, and Community)
BHS would like to recognize and appreciate the valuable contributions our students, staff, and volunteers have provided to make our district great.
Do you know someone who has gone above and beyond to provide service to the BHS community?
Is there a team or group of students that has achieved a regional championship or higher?
Is there a student who has been awarded an academic achievement at the state or national level?
Nominate an individual who has gone above and beyond to provide service to the BHS community.
Nominations are open now and ongoing for district recognition to shine a light on the talent, commitment, and compassion demonstrated in our community. Eligible honorees will be invited to an upcoming Board of Education meeting to receive an award and congratulations from the superintendent and trustees.
Categories
Outstanding Student Achievement Award
- For competitions: Regional and above will be recognized.
- For above and beyond service to the community.
- Any time a team/ group/ club places first or second in their category/ competition.
- For exceptional academic achievements (typically that make it outside of the school in some way).
- For extraordinary accomplishments in co-curricular activities.
Employee Excellence Award
- Above and beyond service to the community and/or classroom.
- Representing Bloomfield Hills Schools at a National level.
- Awards and special recognition beyond a local level.
Bloomfield Hills Schools Service Award
- Recognize individuals who contribute their time and talents to make a positive difference for the students or programs of Bloomfield Hills Schools.
