Strategic Planning

A strategic plan acts like a compass: it defines a shared direction for our district and aligns our actions toward key priorities. As such, it will allow us to create a roadmap for achieving the mission and vision we recently adopted. It also helps us make informed and responsible decisions with accountability and purpose.

The Strategic Planning Working Group brings together a comprehensive team of voices from across Bloomfield Hills Schools to guide and shape the planning process. This group is intentionally designed to represent the many perspectives that make our district strong.

The Working Group is comprised of:

• Leadership: district and building leaders who help set direction and provide oversight.
• Principals and School Leaders: representing the daily experiences of our schools.
• Teachers: across grade levels and subject areas, bringing the perspective of classroom learning.
• Central Administration: including staff from the business office, operations, safety and security, special education, family outreach, athletics, and student support services.
• Parents and Community Organizations: ensuring that family and community voices are at the heart of the process.

Working Group members are charged with elevating the voices of the communities they represent to help shape the strategic plan. More specifically, they will:

1. Participate in monthly Working Group meetings to brainstorm ideas and provide feedback on drafts.
2. Complete pre-work as assigned.
3. Communicate progress on the plan with their school community. 

Typically, developing a district-wide strategic plan takes several months, often spanning the course of a school year. This timeframe allows us to fully engage in listening, gathering input from all stakeholders, analyzing data, defining goals, and crafting actionable strategies.

The implementation usually unfolds over three to five years. That timeframe provides the space needed to turn strategic priorities into real actions while adapting as needs evolve. During this period, districts track progress and share updates with the community to ensure the plan remains relevant and impactful.

A diverse group participates in creating the strategic plan, including district leaders, principals, teachers from all grade levels and subject areas, central administrators (such as business, operations, safety, special education, family outreach, athletics, and student support), and representatives from parents and community organizations. Our Working Group brings these voices together to enrich the process; reflecting many interconnected roles and perspectives. In addition, there will be opportunities for other community members to provide direct feedback during the process through surveys, focus groups, or other methods.

Success is measured through clearly defined goals and ongoing monitoring. Throughout the implementation phase, the district will share regular updates, measure progress against key indicators, and adjust strategies as needed. This transparent approach keeps the plan alive, actionable, and responsive to the needs of our school community.

Student voice is an important part of this work. Input will be gathered through student surveys, the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Board, and opportunities to share ideas during visits to schools.
