On November 4, 2025 voters in Bloomfield Hills Schools will be asked to consider a Sinking Fund Replacement Proposal. The district is asking to replace and extend the millage to levy 1.5 mills for a period of 10 years.

When is the election?

The election will be held on Tuesday, November 4, 2025. The polls are open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.

Absentee ballots are available after September 25.

Early voting will also be available for this election. All registered voters have the option to visit an early voting site. Early voting starts Saturday, October 25, and will finish Sunday, November 2. The early voting site for Bloomfield Township residents is at the Bloomfield Township Public Library, 1099 Lone Pine Rd. Bloomfield Hills, MI 48302. The hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except on Thursday when the hours are noon to 8 p.m. Additionally, there is a central early voting site for all Oakland County residents that is located at Waterford Oaks Activity Center, 2800 Watkins Lake Rd. Waterford, MI 48328.

Is this a new request of tax payers?

This millage has been levied in Bloomfield Hills Schools since 2005, when it was first approved by the voters for 1.5 mills. The millage has been renewed by voters so it could continue to support the schools three times – in 2014, 2018, and 2023.

When the voters renewed the millage in 2023 for three years, the district said it would assess the infrastructure needs as the 2020 Bond approached completion. That has happened, and through the assessments, the district is now asking voters for 1.5 mills for 10 years.

Why is Bloomfield Hills Schools asking voters to consider this ballot proposal and why now?

The 2020 Bond approved by the community focused on renovating and building facilities needed as the district reorganized and “right sized” the school district, including going from three middle schools to two middle schools; offering K-5 elementary school grade configurations and 6-8 middle school grade configurations.

While many improvements were made with the 2020 Bond, the district studied its ongoing facility needs into the future, and the study clearly showed that there is still a need for ongoing repair to our schools. This millage will allow ongoing repairs to the schools while not impacting the district’s general fund.

Why do school districts request sinking fund millages from their community?

Facility repairs, transportation (such as school buses) and replacing needed technology can take up a significant portion of a school district's operating budget, limiting what they can spend on educational program costs such as teachers, textbooks and other teaching materials. Many school districts utilize a sinking fund to create a separate revenue source to address these facility and capital needs, but not at the expense of educational programs.

This sinking fund resource will provide important upgrades and renovations to schools based ongoing prioritization of infrastructure needs, such as:

Security upgrades
Infrastructure improvements such as door replacement and roof repairs
Parking lot improvements
Site improvements such as site erosion repair and improvements to address wetlands
Emergency repairs such as water main breaks; major HVAC repairs
Ongoing replacement and upgrades to playgrounds
Technology upgrades
Transportation, such as the purchase and repair of school buses.

What will happen if the sinking fund millage proposal is rejected?

If the sinking fund millage is rejected, the school district will use general fund dollars for critical infrastructure, security, technology, and transportation needs. Bloomfield Hills Schools will then need to make difficult decisions regarding the academic, co-curricular, and extracurricular activities that the district is able to offer. Additionally, Bloomfield Hills Schools will continue to defer repairs on non-critical needs which will increase costs of future projects.
