Academics
International Baccalaureate
Bloomfield Hills Schools uses a teaching approach called the International Baccalaureate (IB) that is recognized worldwide. IB helps students become curious, knowledgeable, confident, and caring individuals. At BHS, IB is offered at all grade levels: Kindergarten to fifth grade (Primary Years), sixth to tenth grade (Middle Years), and grades 11 and 12 (Diploma Program). With the IB curriculum, students are encouraged to take charge of their learning and acquire skills that will help them succeed in a rapidly changing world.
Experiential Learning
Students thrive on experiential and active learning, which ignites their curiosity and engagement. At Bloomfield Hills, we embrace experiential learning through a range of approaches, such as classroom practices, interdisciplinary events, place-based experiences, both curricular and extra-curricular activities, and by leveraging community resources like Bowers Farm and the Johnson Nature Center.
Social Emotional Learning
We believe in the importance of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) as a proven method for student success. SEL is an evidence-based approach that empowers learners to develop healthy identities, manage their emotions, set and achieve goals, show empathy towards others, build supportive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
Dynamic Learning Environments
At our schools, we prioritize creating an optimal learning experience that promotes well-being and meets the diverse needs of our students. Our classrooms are thoughtfully designed with a focus on active learning, future-proof design, and alignment with research-based teaching practices.
Special Education
From our exceptional D/HH program, to Wing Lake Developmental Center's warm and welcoming environment, BHS is proud of the myriad of services we offer special education students.
English Language Development (ELD)

Highlights from the Classroom
Elementary students in Bloomfield Hills Schools are learning a growth mindset through engaging lessons in STEAM unified arts classes. A growth mindset refers to the belief that the brain can grow with practice, and that mistakes are opportunities for learning and improvement.
South Hills Middle School 7th grade ELA teachers introduced an alternative approach to address the common challenge of maintaining updated reading logs for independent reading regarding a book of the students' choice. In lieu of the reading log, students are now given three choices to show their comprehension of the book: take a multiple choice test about the reading material, present a book talk in front of the class, or schedule a book conference with Media Specialist, Jill Rilley.
