Instructional Technology

• Kindergarten through 12th grade students have the opportunity to use a district-provided device.
• Students in grades K-1 are provided an Ipad 
• Students in grades 2-8 are provided a Chromebook
• Students in grades 9-12 can choose to bring their own device or can check-out a district Chromebook
• Students are expected to bring their device fully charged daily

The following lists include the generally accepted recommended standards for bring-your-own-devices. Currently available specifications can change rapidly -- the lists provided below are not meant to be a comprehensive or exhaustive list of components, but serve as a guideline around which to plan purchases or provision of devices.

No user will be penalized for devices not meeting these recommendations, although their working experience may be impacted if a device is below any of these recommendations.

Additional requirements may exist for specific classes and courses. It is recommended to consult with faculty to determine if any additional or different requirements may exist.

Purpose:

Bloomfield Hills Schools encourages innovation and supports the responsible stewardship of resources.  To that end, this guidance defines accountable and acceptable use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by students and teachers in our schools. This guidance aims to promote the educational benefits of AI and necessary skill development while maintaining the academic integrity of our learning environment.  

1. Student Acceptable Use
   • AI as a Learning Aid: Students are permitted to use AI for various functions under the guidance of the teacher. For example, they can use AI to understand complex concepts, utilize multiple modalities to summarize or clarify complex text, or create outlines for essays. Specific AI use is at the teacher's discretion and will be communicated in lesson instructions.
   • AI as a Source of Reference: AI-generated content can be used as a source of reference, provided it is appropriately cited and not presented as the student’s own work.
   • Collaborative Learning with AI: Students may use AI as a partner, for example, to expand on themes, support arguments, and find quotes or sources that align with their learning objectives.

• Responsibilities:
  • Understand AI's Limitations: Students should recognize that AI solutions may be inaccurate or biased and use AI to complement their learning, not replace it.
  • Maintain Academic Integrity: AI assistance should be transparently reported and appropriately cited.  Using AI for a particular assignment is up to the teacher's discretion.  ​​In the absence of other guidance, treat the use of AI as you would treat assistance from another person.  For example, if it is unacceptable to have another person substantially complete a task like writing an essay, it is also unacceptable to have AI to complete the task.
  • Documentation of Original Work: All written submissions should be submitted as directed by the teacher.  However, students should keep a record of their original work in such a way as to document that it is authentically their own work.  For example, essays should be written in Bloomfield Google Docs so a revision history (which requires editing access) can be reviewed.   
• Handling the Misuse of AI:  
  • If a student misuses AI for an assignment, the teacher will engage in conversations around the inappropriate use so the student can address the concern quickly. 
  • If additional suspicions of academic dishonesty are raised, students are to willingly engage in knowledge checks, complete additional assignments, provide evidence of original work, or have discussions to demonstrate their understanding of the subject matter.
  • Misuse of AI may lead to disciplinary actions consistent with the school’s code of conduct/teacher syllabus.

2. Teacher Guidelines for AI Use
   • AI as a Teaching Tool: Teachers are encouraged to use AI to demonstrate problem-solving methods, address common misconceptions, demonstrate common problems that arise with AI use, and provide personalized learning experiences. They are expected to teach AI Literacy skills and ethical considerations of artificial intelligence technology within their discipline.
   • Knowledge about AI in Curriculum: Teachers should be knowledgeable about AI's potential uses and limitations within their curriculum and clearly communicate to students what is acceptable versus unacceptable use. Bloomfield Hills has a responsibility and commitment to teaching students how to appropriately use artificial intelligence, including generative artificial intelligence tools.  
   • Use of generative AI detectors as screeners only: Many versions of generative AI detectors are marketed towards educators. Unfortunately, these software are not accurate enough to be considered a definitive judgment. This software can initiate investigations into academic dishonesty but cannot be used as stand-alone evidence of cheating.  

• Responsibilities:
  • Teach students how to properly and ethically use artificial intelligence tools, including generative artificial intelligence.
  • As expectations may vary between classes, it is important for teachers to provide students with clear guidelines on the use of AI within coursework and when and how it should be cited. 
  • Stay informed about the evolving nature of AI tools and their implications for teaching and learning.
• Handling Suspicions of Misuse: If there is suspicion of AI misuse, follow a systematic approach, including discussions with the student, reviewing the work against AI-generated content, and offering options for the student to demonstrate their knowledge.  The steps for investigating should be outlined in the course syllabus.

3. Governance Group: Bloomfield Hills Schools will establish a governance group to review and provide updates to this guidance.  This governance group will be composed of representatives from students, parents, building administrators, central office administration, board members, and teachers.
4. Privacy & Best Practices:  All staff must maintain privacy practices that align with ethical considerations and legal obligations. Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools can greatly enhance learning and administrative efficiency, but they must be used responsibly, especially when handling sensitive student data.

• Student Privacy is Paramount: All student data, including personally identifiable information (PII), academic performance, behavioral records, and health information, is protected by laws such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Any AI tool used in the school system must comply with these regulations.
  • Example: No student-specific data should be entered into the system if a teacher uses an AI tool to generate lesson plans or assessments. For instance, avoid inputting names, grades, or behavioral information that could identify individual students.
• Data Minimization: When using AI tools, collect and share only the minimum necessary data. There should be a clear understanding of what data is being used by the AI tool, why it is necessary, and how it will be protected.
  • Example: A staff member using AI for attendance tracking should anonymize data where possible. Instead of using a full name or student ID, aggregate data could be used to assess trends without linking specific records to individual students.
• Vendor Transparency and Agreements: Before using any AI tool, ensure the vendor provides clear information on data storage, security, and sharing practices. Always vet AI vendors for compliance with educational privacy laws and ensure the institution has a signed agreement that outlines data protection responsibilities. AI Tools provided by the district have been vetted.
  • Example: When using third-party AI tools for grading or administrative functions, review their privacy policies to ensure they do not share or sell student data to third parties. The agreement should clearly state that data ownership remains with the institution and parents/students.
• Human Oversight AI tools are powerful but should not replace human decision-making in contexts that affect student welfare. Ensure that a qualified staff member always reviews and validates AI-generated insights.
  • Example: If the AI tool generates a response to a query or a report on trends (such as data reports), a teacher or administrator should review and approve the final output before it is shared. This ensures the tool doesn’t unintentionally create bias or misunderstandings.
• Training and Awareness: Staff must be trained on the benefits and risks of AI tools. Understanding how to use AI safely is critical for protecting student privacy. We will implement regular training sessions on best practices for data privacy when using AI in the classroom and administration.
  • Key Example: Teachers using AI to create individualized learning paths should know how to anonymize data, assess the reliability of AI outputs, and identify potential privacy risks. Staff should understand the limits of AI, especially in terms of accuracy and bias.

Review and Update of Policy:

This policy will be reviewed and updated to adapt to the rapidly evolving AI landscape and its implications in the educational setting.

Students who require specific technology related to an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) or 504 Plan will be contacted through the Special Education Department to discuss arrangements.

Data and Information

• Keep passwords private. Never share you passwords with anyone.
• Use only your log-in name and email address when chatting or sending email. Never give out personal information such as your name, address, or phone number.
• Always delete unknown email attachments without opening them.
• Nothing you write, post, or upload on the Internet is completely private ---including email, photos, or posts.

Personal Safety and Privacy

• Do not share photos or information about yourself, your family, school, or your home with people you meet online.
• Not everyone you meet on-line is who they claim to be.
• Do not meet someone you met on-line or have them visit you without permission from your parents.
• If a person writes something that is mean or makes you feel uncomfortable, do not respond and tell a trusted adult such a parent, guardian, counselor, or teacher.
