Digital Wellness
Bloomfield Hills Schools provides students with access to technology resources to support learning, communication, collaboration, creativity, and academic success. Technology should support and enhance learning in purposeful and responsible ways. Access to district technology resources is a privilege, and students are expected to use them responsibly, safely, and in accordance with district expectations.
Bloomfield Hills Schools recognizes that when evaluating educational technology, not all screen time is created equal. In alignment with Strategic Plan Initiative 2.4 (Integrate Digital Wellness & Responsible Technology Use for All Students), our instructional approach moves beyond rigid clock-watching to focus intentionally on the content, context, and connection of digital media.
Research from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) emphasizes that screen media should be classified by its purpose: consumption, creation, and communication. While passive digital consumption can hinder development by displacing vital face-to-face peer interaction, active movement, and hands-on learning, purposeful media use can bridge learning gaps, strengthen executive function, build self-regulation, and foster critical problem-solving skills.
Because a "one-size-fits-all" approach does not reflect modern research or varying student developmental stages, Bloomfield Hills Schools prioritizes quality over screen hours. We use technology to empower creation, active inquiry, and meaningful collaboration, while actively protecting space for person-to-person connection, physical engagement, and offline learning.
