To further our mission for equity and inclusion, the East Hills Global Education Team (GET) is pleased to announce the launch of the Cavalier Fund. The purpose of this fund is to provide access for all students to enjoy school activities (e.g., field trips). As a school community, our desire is for all students to have these learning experiences. Our intention is to provide families with a chance to give funds to assist our students in a direct and meaningful way. Look for upcoming forms regarding field trips, school events, and other specific enrichment activities for opportunities to donate. You may specify how your funds will be directed through future communication (field trip forms and other specific events and opportunities). The Yearbook is looking for baby photos of your children. It is a tradition at East Hills to include baby photos of the current 8th grade class in the yearbook. As of now we only have a handful of photos. We only have 22 of the 114 eighth grade students. Please find a cute photo of your child and send it to jseaton@bloomfield.org, or send the photo to school and Mrs.Seaton will scan it and return it to your student.

Do you need a holiday gift for your child? Buy them a yearbook. They will treasure it for a lifetime.

Order your yearbook now. Send in payment of $40 to school order online at jostensyeabooks.com. Do not delay. Orders can not be placed after January.

East Hills holds an outdoor recess daily unless it is raining or temperatures drop below 10 degrees (or 10 degrees wind chill). It is essential that students arrive to school with appropriate winter weather play gear—warm coats, hats, gloves, scarves, and other warm clothing. We recommend that all gear be clearly labeled with the student's first and last name. Once the snow flies, students should have snow boots and snow pants for outdoor play.

Dear Families of 8th Grade Students,

Recently, Ms. Westphal spoke with the eighth grade class about National Junior Honor Society. This is a national program of recognition for students who achieve well during their eighth grade year. Students in the eighth grade are eligible to be considered for National Junior Honor Society if they accomplish four separate criteria. The four criteria are: 1. Maintaining a 3.5 grade point average or better throughout their eighth grade year; 2. Achieving all 1s and 2s in citizenship throughout their eighth grade year; 3. Writing a one page essay in which they describe in detail how they showed leadership during their eighth grade year; 4. Accomplishing 20 hours of community service outside of their school day.

Any eighth grader who accomplishes these four criteria will be admitted to the National Junior Honor Society. The students are acknowledged at the eighth grade recognition program on the last day of school and receive a National Junior Honor Society certificate.

The forms with the criteria listed and a community service log were made available to all eighth grade students in their American Studies class. Additional forms may be picked up from Ms. Westphal. The form, essay, and 20 hours of community service are due by the Tuesday following Memorial Day weekend.

World religions are an important component of our seventh grade social studies curriculum. Our PTO in partnership with the BHS Foundation is hoping to help fund a field trip experience that will make possible an opportunity for the entire seventh grade class to visit houses of worship that represent Islam, Judaism, Christianity, and Hinduism. Our goal is to build a structure that will make sure this opportunity is available for all seventh-grade students in all three middle schools in the district. The link below allows you to earmark a contribution through our foundation to make this worthy goal a reality.

Please consider donating today!

Our staff has recently taken the One to World iPad distribution as an opportunity to update our Electronic Devices Policy. This week, classroom teachers have spent time reviewing the revised policy with students and discussing the expectations around responsible usage. Please read the attached document carefully and continue the dialogue at home.

We wish to maintain an educational environment devoid of unnecessary distractions and see the middle years as foundational to developing lifelong habits. Thank you, families, in advance, for supporting the Electronic Devices Policy and assisting us in achieving an appropriate learning environment for our students.

Please take a moment today to reach out to Governor Snyder regarding Senate Bill 571. Senate Bill 571, which has already passed the House & Senate, would prohibit public bodies (like us) from communicating any information regarding ballot issues. As you may know, it is already illegal for public bodies to advocate for ballot issues. However, this would make it illegal for our district to share factual information with our community through radio, television, mass mailing (likely email included), and telephone. This limitation would include cable access stations, our local news stations (WXYZ, WDIV, FOX), radio stations, etc. Call the Governor: 517-373-3400 or share your opinion via his website: https://somgovweb.state.mi.us/GovRelations/ShareOpinion.aspx today. Please let him know we value transparency in our district and this would greatly limit our ability to provide our community with factual information regarding ballot issues. Thank you.

Every year around this time, we think about making a charitable donation. This year, consider a gift to our children. A gift to the BHS Foundation supports all of our students through our mini-grant program. In the past year, we've awarded more than $75,000 in grants. Every school in the district received a grant.

You can credit your donation to the school or schools of your choice. The school credited with the largest amount in donations wins a $1000 grant! Currently BHHS is in first place, but all the schools are in a tight race. You can see the current standings and make a donation at www.bloomfield.org/Donate
