Sherwood Forest is in danger of being destroyed, and it's up to Robin and his band of Merry Men to save the day.  But how does a hero do that when he forgets how to be a hero?

Mrs. Bogrette's 8th grade Drama class will present "The Very Un-Merry Adventures of Robin Hood" on Wednesday, January 24. Students in the A Day class will perform at 6:30 p.m. Students in the B Day class will perform at 8:15 p.m.

FOR PARENTS OF SPRING FORENSICS TEAM MEMBERS

Students who were selected for the BHMS Spring Forensics Team have provided their parents' e-mail addresses. Mrs. Bogrette, Head Forensics Team Coach, sent a parent letter to those addresses. It included information about required paperwork and fee deadlines, practices and important dates for the upcoming Forensics season. If you did NOT receive this week's message from Mrs. Bogrette (mbogrette@bloomfield.org), please provide her with your preferred e-mail address.

PLEASE SEND IN YOUR BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION

There is a Box Tops collection bin in the main office. Please send in any you've been collecting. REMEMBER . . . each Box Top is worth ten cents to BHMS -- but worth nothing if you toss them in your waste basket. The math is simply amazing. If each of our 750 students brought in 10 box tops each month, for the nine months of the school year, BHMS would earn $6,750 to use toward programs or purchases not covered under the budget.

Thanks for supporting BHMS in small ways that can have big results. For more information about products that contain Box Tops, click HERE.

COLD AND FLU SEASON - WHEN TO KEEP OR TAKE YOUR CHILD HOME FROM SCHOOL

With the cold and flu season in full swing, it is a good time to review procedures with regard to sick children. A child who is sick will not be able to perform well in school and is likely to spread the illness to other students and staff. These guidelines are meant to serve the best interests of all the children and staff in our school.

Students who get sick at home
Please keep your child home if he/she has experienced any of these symptoms or ailments in the previous 24 hours:

  1. A fever of 100 degrees or higher (The CDC recommends that students remain home from school until they are fever free for 24 hours, without the use of fever reducing drugs).
  2. Vomiting
  3. Diarrhea
  4. Strep Throat (Must be on an antibiotic for at least 24 hours before returning to school).
  5. A bad cold, with a very runny nose or bad cough, especially if it has kept the child awake at night.

Students who become at sick at school
Students who become ill during the school day should go to the BHMS clinic. The clinic parent volunteers are there to facilitate a call to a sick student's parent or guardian, so that arrangements can be made to have the student picked as soon as possible. The clinic is not intended to be a place for sick children to remain for any length of time during the school day. If your daytime or emergency phone numbers or contacts change during the year, please notify the office immediately so that your student's emergency card can be updated.

ROBOTICS NEWS
BHMS is proud to have students on nine different Robotics teams this year. There are four First Lego League (FLL) teams and five First Tech Challenge (FTC) Teams. The teams, along with many teams from other Bloomfield Hills District schools, compete in various competitions throughout Michigan. Some advance to national competitions in other states. Guiding the teams are amazing parents/guardians who volunteer hours of their time for meetings and competitions. Under "District News", the district posts competition results for all teams in the district on a regular basis. Please take some time to read through the impressive competition results and awards won by the following teams, which are made up of BHMS students:   FIRST Lego League (Grades 4 through 8): BHMS Robo Ticks, Motor City Maniacs, Tech Tigers, Factory Falcons FIRST Tech Challenge (Grades 7 through 12; determined by student's age): The Golden Gears, The Mechanical Monkeys, The Purple Protons, No Limits, The Space Unicorns. We wish all of the BHMS student teams luck in this competition season. Robotics rocks!

USE THIS PHONE NUMBER FOR ATTENDANCE

In order to report absences, late arrivals, request early dismissal or a bus pass, or to get a school-related message to your child on a timely basis, you must call the attendance line directly at 248-341-6010.  Calling 248-341-6010 will get you to a recorded line. Messages on that line are checked on a regular basis throughout the school day. Leaving a message on any other line may result in the message not being retrieved or passed on to your student on a timely basis. Please program the 248-341-6010 attendance line phone number on to your phone and use only that line for the above purposes. Thank you.

SHOP AT KROGER AND SUPPORT BHMS

You can support BHMS when you do your regular shopping at Kroger by designating Bloomfield Hills Middle School as your Plus Card Community Rewards program recipient. The Kroger website provides instructions for setting up a new account, or for designating Bloomfield Hills Middle School (Organization Code 28755) to your existing account.

Once you've designated BHMS as your organization, each time you shop at Kroger and use your Plus Card, BHMS earns reward points, which translate into checks paid to BHMS quarterly. That's all there is to it!

BHMS Design & Technology

“Everything we build, we test,” Keith Kimmel, BHMS Design and Tech Teacher says. “If it’s a top, we spin it.  If it’s a rocket, we launch it.  If it’s a robot or a car, we race it.  Students are always thinking about what they can do to make things work, and how to make them better.”

“I enjoy the designing process because it’s fun to find solutions for problems,” Rose Choudhary, 8th grader, shares.  “I also do Robotics after school; Design and Tech and Robotics go hand in hand.”
