"OKAY TO SAY" SAFETY PROGRAM PREVENTS CRISES, SAVES LIVES The OKAY2SAY program is presented by the Michigan Attorney General's office each year to our BHMS students, and students of other participating schools in the state. The program has a motto of "Stop the Silence. Help End the Violence." It encourages confidential tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at students, school employees, or schools. In just its fourth year, the program has received over 10,000 confidential tips. When a tip comes in that relates to a member of the BHMS community, administrators are notified and appropriate intervention takes place. BHMS is proud to offer the OKAY2SAY program to our students each year, and to know that students use it as a means of reaching on their own behalf or on behalf of their peers. Please take a few minutes to read the Winter 2018 OK2SAY newsletter. It provides a breakdown of the types of tips phoned in, and how some have not only helped students in crisis, but actually saved lives. YEARBOOK ORDERING DEADLINE IS FEBRUARY 15 Students wishing to purchase a BHMS yearbook must order online directly with Josten's before February 15. Students in the A Day class will perform at 6:30 p.m. Students in the B Day class will perform at 8:15 p.m. Parents of 8th grade Drama students should be getting updates, which include important MANDATORY rehearsal dates, in their MyBloomfield e-mails. ROBOTICS NEWS BHMS is proud to have students on nine different Robotics teams this year. There are four First Lego League (FLL) teams and five First Tech Challenge (FTC) Teams. The teams, along with many teams from other Bloomfield Hills District schools, compete in various competitions throughout Michigan. Some advance to national competitions in other states. Guiding the teams are amazing parents/guardians who volunteer hours of their time for meetings and competitions. Under "District News", the district posts competition results for all teams in the district on a regular basis. Please take some time to read through the impressive competition results and awards won by the following teams, which are made up of BHMS students: FIRST Lego League (Grades 4 through 8): BHMS Robo Ticks, Motor City Maniacs, Tech Tigers, Factory Falcons FIRST Tech Challenge (Grades 7 through 12; determined by student's age): The Golden Gears, The Mechanical Monkeys, The Purple Protons, No Limits, The Space Unicorns. We wish all of the BHMS student teams luck in this competition season. Robotics rocks! COLD AND FLU SEASON - WHEN TO KEEP OR TAKE YOUR CHILD HOME FROM SCHOOL With the cold and flu season in full swing, it is a good time to review procedures with regard to sick children. A child who is sick will not be able to perform well in school and is likely to spread the illness to other students and staff. These guidelines are meant to serve the best interests of all the children and staff in our school.
Students who get sick at home Please keep your child home if he/she has experienced any of these symptoms or ailments in the previous 24 hours: - A fever of 100 degrees or higher (The CDC recommends that students remain home from school until they are fever free for 24 hours, without the use of fever reducing drugs).
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Strep Throat (Must be on an antibiotic for at least 24 hours before returning to school).
- A bad cold, with a very runny nose or bad cough, especially if it has kept the child awake at night.
Students who become at sick at school Students who become ill during the school day should go to the BHMS clinic. The clinic parent volunteers are there to facilitate a call to a sick student's parent or guardian, so that arrangements can be made to have the student picked as soon as possible. The clinic is not intended to be a place for sick children to remain for any length of time during the school day. If your daytime or emergency phone numbers or contacts change during the year, please notify the office immediately so that your student's emergency card can be updated. USE THIS PHONE NUMBER FOR ATTENDANCE In order to report absences, late arrivals, request early dismissal or a bus pass, or to get a school-related message to your child on a timely basis, you must call the attendance line directly at 248-341-6010. Calling 248-341-6010 will get you to a recorded line. Messages on that line are checked on a regular basis throughout the school day. Leaving a message on any other line may result in the message not being retrieved or passed on to your student on a timely basis. Please program the 248-341-6010 attendance line phone number on to your phone and use only that line for the above purposes. Thank you. PLEASE SEND IN YOUR BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION There is a Box Tops collection bin in the main office. Please send in any you've been collecting. REMEMBER . . . each Box Top is worth ten cents to BHMS -- but worth nothing if you toss them in your waste basket. The math is simply amazing. If each of our 750 students brought in 10 box tops each month, for the nine months of the school year, BHMS would earn $6,750 to use toward programs or purchases not covered under the budget. Thanks for supporting BHMS in small ways that can have big results. For more information about products that contain Box Tops, click HERE. SHOP AT KROGER AND SUPPORT BHMS You can support BHMS when you do your regular shopping at Kroger by designating Bloomfield Hills Middle School as your Plus Card Community Rewards program recipient. The Kroger website provides instructions for setting up a new account, or for designating Bloomfield Hills Middle School (Organization Code 28755) to your existing account. Once you've designated BHMS as your organization, each time you shop at Kroger and use your Plus Card, BHMS earns reward points, which translate into checks paid to BHMS quarterly. That's all there is to it! END OF BHMS LANCER UPDATE IB DP Family Information Sessions Families interested in learning about the IB Diploma Programme (DP) at BHHS are invited to attend a DP Family Information Session. - Current 9th (going into 10th) Thursday, February 15th, from 6 - 6:45 p.m.

School Finance Research Collaborative Study Findings The full report, commissioned by the School Finance Research Collaborative, is available at www.fundMIschools.org and includes the following key findings: - The base per-pupil cost to educate a regular education K-12 student in Michigan is $9,590, which does not include transportation, food service or capital costs, and only includes pension costs at 4.6% of wages.
- Charter and traditional public schools should be funded equally.
- It costs $14,155 to educate a preschool student age 3 or 4.
- In addition to the base per-pupil cost, a percentage of the base cost should be provided for special education, English Language Learners, students living in poverty and programs to provide Career and Technical Education.
- Transportation costs should be funded at $973 per rider until further study can be carried out.
- Because Michigan's school district sizes vary widely and small districts lack economies of scale, district size must be taken into account, with funding increases provided for all districts under 7,500 students.
- Collaborative leaders emphasized additional research will also be needed in several areas, including a full capital study to examine the costs of charter and traditional public schools; a review of literate and illiterate poverty, and concentration of poverty by district; and a full transportation costs study.
On Behalf of the BBCC Dear BHS Families: A very dangerous social media trend called the "Tide Pod Challenge" is being done by teens. As noted by our prevention partner Birmingham Bloomfield Community Coalition, CBS News has reported teens are taking Tide Pods, placing it in their mouth then biting down while recording this challenge on social media. For timely news and information, please visit Birmingham Bloomfield Community Coalition and its Youth Action Board Facebook page. PLEASE READ IF YOU USE THE MORNING CARPOOL LINE We have received numerous phone calls about a carpool lane situation in the morning that is causing concern for student safety, and a considerable back-up of cars, often well on to Quarton Road. Some families are pulling in to the carpool lane before the building opens at 7:55 a.m., and having their students wait in the car until the building opens. If you arrive early and choose to have your student stay in the car until 7:55, please do not wait in the carpool lane. Instead, you are welcome to park in the the lot near the tennis courts until your student is ready to exit from the car. The carpool lane is intended to be a dynamic line where cars pull up and students are dropped off from the right lane only. When cars park in the right lane and wait, other families who wish to drop their students off immediately either get stuck in the right lane until traffic clears, or are forced to pull in to the left lane to drop their student off. This presents a considerable safety concern for students, who are then crossing the left lane in front of traffic. Thank you for your support, understanding and compliance.
