NEW NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY (NJHS) SERVICE REQUREMENTS

Taking action to make the world a better place is a characteristic that is valued at BHMS. Service is one form of action. Service is defined as action that has a reach beyond the classroom with the purpose of making change. Through service as action experiences (formerly known as community service) in the classroom, throughout the school and within the community, students will enhance important skills of collaboration, perseverance, initiative, understanding, and engagement. NJHS is following the district shift from logging service hours to acquiring and reflecting on service experiences and learning outcomes for students.

Changes to NJHS Service Expectations
While in previous years NJHS candidates in the Bloomfield Hills School District have completed 20 hours of community service to fulfill the service requirement for induction, beginning in the 2017-2018 school year, the requirement now asks that students complete two service experiences in 8th grade, one to meet the grade-level requirement for Service as Action, and a second to fulfill the requirement for NJHS Induction.

In the past, students have completed a paper-copy form to verify their accumulated hours. This year, students will be able to complete their Service as Action reflection using the online BHMS Service as Action Form (this link is also found on the BHMS website under "Links and Resources"). This will foster improved communication between students and each school regarding the high-quality Service as Action experiences in which students are participating.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the new service requirements, please contact 8th Grade Counselor NJHS Advisor, Anthony Flevaris.

REPORTS CARDS AVAILABLE ONLINE

Report cards for grades 5 through 8 are now available online through Parent Portal ("My Bloomfield") The document, ACCESSING YOUR STUDENT'S REPORT CARD, will help you to navigate Parent Portal and download your child's report card for printing. You will need your My Bloomfield user name (PIN) and password. There is a user name and password retrieval option on the site. If you do not have access to a printer and need a hard copy of your student's report card, contact Mrs. Foronato in the BHMS office. The following documents are available to assist you in interpreting your student's report card.

5th Grade Specific Report Card Information: This 5th GRADE PARENT LETTER FROM MR. ENGLISH outlines additional information about our fifth-grade (elementary) report card.

6th, 7th and 8th Grade Specific Report Card Information: Middle school semester report cards include not only traditional letter grades but also information based on the assessment criteria from the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP). The inclusion of the MYP assessment data in the report card provides families with information on student progress in each subject area of the MYP, complementing the traditional letter grade report card and offering an additional layer of information regarding student achievement. In the MYP, each subject area has four criteria (often referred to as Criteria A, B, C, and D) that provide a focus for instruction and assessment at BHMS. Student performance on each criterion is evaluated on an eight-point scale.

As additional resources you can read through this 6-8 GRADE LETTER FROM MR. ENGLISH and list of FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT MYP REPORTS OF PROGRESS. If you have additional questions after reviewing these documents, please direct them to your child's teachers, building administration, or our MYP coordinator, Kathy Janelle.

Within the middle school report card, you will also see information regarding behavior and effort. See explanations of behavior and effort grades below:

BHMS Behavioral Expectations: The BHMS faculty defines behavior as the actions and reactions of students within their environment. The following are descriptions of expectations to be used at marking periods and to assist students in monitoring their own behavior:

1 = Excellent
2 = Good
3 = Satisfactory
4 = Needs Improvement
5 = Unsatisfactory

BHMS Effort Expectations: The BlHMS faculty defines Effort as the extent to which a student is invested in class as demonstrated by preparedness, active engagement, striving to reach full potential, and intrinsic motivation to participate. The following are descriptions of expectations to be used at marking periods and to assist students in monitoring their own effort:

J = Excellent
K = Good
L = Satisfactory
M = Unsatisfactory
U = Needs Improvement

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION REDEMPTION TIME

The Box Tops for Education Program has two redemption dates during the year;  November 1 and March 1. If you are saving up Box Tops for BHMS, please turn them in to the collection box in the Main Office by February 15. Carol Davis, Box Tops Coordinator for BHMS, and her team will be checking them for expiration dates, sorting, counting and preparing them for the March 1 redemption deadline. This is no small task, and BHMS is extremely thankful to Carol and her team for their efforts.

REMEMBER . . . each Box Top is worth ten cents to BHMS, but worth nothing if you toss it in your waste basket. The math is simply amazing. If 750 students each brought in only 10 Box Tops a month, for the nine months of the school year, BHMS would earn $6,750 annually to use toward programs or purchases not covered under the budget. Thanks for supporting BHMS in small ways that can have big results. For a list of products that contain Box Tops, click HERE.

PTO NEWS and EVENTS

PARENTS' NIGHT FUNDRAISER NETS $20,000 FOR PTO: The PTO sponsored Parents' Night Out, held on Saturday, January 27, at the Hub Stadium in Auburn Hills, was an amazing success. Thank you to the event committee members Soni Doshi, Hannan Alsahlani, Kathy Galaurdi, Erika Solomon, Jen Harst, Natalie Shirley, Patsy Bugajewski, Renu Zaretsky and Julia Schenke, for their tireless efforts from conception to completion of the event, and the many details in between. Thank you also all who came out to play, to those who couldn't make it, but donated anyway, and a special thank you to all the BHMS teachers and staff who donated their time and fabulous experiences to the auction. In fact, there are still teacher experiences available. Please check out the remaining auction items by going to www.bhmspto.com. You will find the items under the E-store tab.

The event so far has brought in over $23,000! After expenses, PTO netted just over $20,000. This allows the PTO to do, among other things:

  • Pay for bus transportation for a field trip for every grade
  • Provide a stipend to teachers for school supplies
  • Purchase 8th grade recognition gifts
  • Continue to support school clubs
  • Make upgrades to the student clinic

PTO ONLINE DIRECTORY SPONSOR: The PTO would like to thank Heather and Steve Kallabat and Internal Medicine and Pediatrics of Bloomfield for sponsoring our school's online directory for the 3rd year in a row. The generosity of Dr. Kallabat and his family and office renews the license with MySchoolAnywhere. The donations are once again appreciated.

That directory is available to PTO members. If you are not in the directory and would like to be, please click here and enter the code LancerDirectory. You can support the PTO by joining, which will give you access to the online directory. Please click on this link to join. The system will let you add your own information. IRON CHEFS IN THE 8TH GRADE

Mrs. Yodzio's 8th grade Foods classes participated in the annual "Iron Chef Challenge" in January. This is a fun learning experience, where students work in teams to prepare foods that include a secret ingredient. The food is then judged by members of the staff. 8th graders Taryn Wiggins and Andreya Vo have written an article summarizing and sharing student feedback about the challenge. The article and accompanying photos can be found by clicking here.

MUSIC BOOSTERS NOTES - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

7th AND 8th GRADE MUSIC PARENTS/GUARDIANS!  The Festival Lock-In is one week away and parent volunteers are still needed to make this evening of music and fun a success!  Please go to BHMSpto.com under the Volunteer tab to sign up. Refer questions about this event to Sara Bicos .

REMINDER ABOUT STUDENT ILLNESSES

Students who have a fever should always be kept home from school. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) defines a fever as a temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher. In fact, the CDC recommends that anyone with a fever remain home until they are they are fever free for 24 hours, without the use of fever reducing drugs. We ask that you adhere to these recommendations for the health of your child, as well as for the other students and adults at BHMS.

Students who become ill during the school day should go to the BHMS Clinic. Clinic parent volunteers are there to facilitate a call to a sick student's parent or guardian so that arrangements can be made to have the student picked as soon as possible. The clinic is not intended to be a place for sick children to remain for any length of time during the school day. If your daytime or emergency phone numbers or contacts change during the year, please update your student's profile on your Parent Connect page.

The Southeastern Michigan Region of the Scholastic Art Awards is sponsored by the College for Creative Studies. The contest begins at a regional level and winning entries move on to a state then national competitions. This region received more than 6,200 works of art and 250 portfolios from middle school and high school students. Click here for more information.

USE THIS PHONE NUMBER FOR ATTENDANCE

In order to report absences, late arrivals, request early dismissal or a bus pass, or to get a school-related message to your child on a timely basis, you must call the attendance line directly at 248-341-6010.  Calling 248-341-6010 will get you to a recorded line. Messages on that line are checked on a regular basis throughout the school day. Leaving a message on any other line may result in the message not being retrieved or passed on to your student on a timely basis. Please program the 248-341-6010 attendance line phone number on to your phone and use only that line for the above purposes. Thank you.

SHOP AT KROGER AND SUPPORT BHMS

You can support BHMS when you do your regular shopping at Kroger by designating Bloomfield Hills Middle School as your Plus Card Community Rewards program recipient. The Kroger website provides instructions for setting up a new account, or for designating Bloomfield Hills Middle School (Organization Code 28755) to your existing account.

Once you've designated BHMS as your organization, each time you shop at Kroger and use your Plus Card, BHMS earns reward points, which translate into checks paid to BHMS quarterly. That's all there is to it!
