Dear BHMS Families, Staff, and Community,

I am writing to you today to make you aware of an ongoing investigation into a student's inappropriate behavior that could be considered threatening. Safety is our number one priority and, since we believe safety is a community effort and responsibility, I'd like to share the following information with you.

Our team, along with district administrators, Bloomfield Township Police, and other resources are currently investigating the student's recent inappropriate behavior.  While I cannot share with you all of the details for legal reasons, I can share with you the following:

  • This involved one of our students here at BHMS.
  • The inappropriate behavior was directed toward a specific employee and that employee has been made aware and is receiving support.
  • We are working closely with local law enforcement and other local resources to conduct a thorough investigation.
  • Both the student and student's family are fully cooperating with our investigation.

Many families have asked about the process for determining whether a threat is credible or not.  You will be receiving communication from Dr. Glass that will outline both the methodology for reviewing threats as well as the possible actions taken at the conclusion of the investigation.

I want to reassure you that the student will not have access to our campus over the course of the investigation.  Our student code of conduct will be our guidepost as we move forward and the safety of our students and staff will remain our top priority.

As you know, for legal reasons, we will not be able to share with you details beyond what I have shared above.  However, I can assure you that we are utilizing every resource available to us and have many steps in place to ensure a thorough investigation.

Finally, as we do every day, we continue to work with Bloomfield Township Police to ensure student and staff safety at all times.  You may see additional patrols and police activity at all of our schools. Please know that this is not because we believe there is any cause for concern, but rather a precautionary measure offered by Bloomfield Township Police given the Florida incident, media aftermath, and general uptick in reported suspicious behavior.

As always, my door is open to you.  Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions or concerns you have.  I am proud to be a member of this community and appreciate your support of all BHMS students and staff.

Thank you for your commitment to student and staff safety and your continued partnership.

Sincerely,

Randy English, Principal

Bloomfield Hills Middle School
