FOR FAMILIES OF 8TH GRADERS - NEW DATE FOR BHHS COUNSELOR APPOINTMENTS

The Bloomfield Hills High School counselors have set Wednesday, March 21, as the new date to meet here at BHMS with our 8th graders and a parent/guardian, to collect and review high school course selection sheets. Rather than asking every 8th grade family to reschedule an appointment, you may keep the same appointment time for which you signed up for March 14.

If you don't recall your previously scheduled appointment time, or if that original time no longer works for you, please e-mail Mrs. Foronato or call her at 248-341-6002, as soon as possible.

It is preferred that a parent/guardian accompany their 8th grade student to this appointment. However, if you can not make the rescheduled March 21 appointment, your student can meet with the Bloomfield Hills High School counselor by him/herself.

8th graders should enter their course requests in MiStar, as instructed by the BHHS counselors, prior to the meeting. The hard copy of the course request sheet should be signed by a parent or guardian, and turned in to the BHHS counselor at the March 21 meeting.

If you have questions about BH High School course selection, please feel free to contact Anthony Flevaris, BHMS 8th grade counselor.

HOOPS FOR HEART PHYS ED CLASS FUNDRAISER ENDS MARCH 29

It's time for the annual Hoops for Heart Physical Education Class Fundraiser for grades 6, 7 and 8. The annual campaign raises awareness of, and funds for the battle against heart disease. Physical Education teacher, Mr. DiVito, has prepared a letter with more information about the Hoops for Heart campaign, and how you can help students be healthy and raise funds at the same time.

BHMS STUDENTS SHINE IN AND OUT OF THE CLASSROOM

Three Robotics teams, each made up entirely of BHMS students, are competing in the FIRST Tech Challenge North Super Regional robotics tournament on March 15, 16 and 17, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Space Unicorns, The Mechanical Monkeys, and The Purple Protons all qualified for the national event based on their performance at the Michigan FIRST Tech Challenge State Championship in December.

They join 16 other FIRST Tech Challenge teams from Michigan, and a total of 72 FIRST Tech Challenge teams, representing 11 states, at the highly competitive Super Regional event. Teams that advance will compete next in the FIRST World Championship, which will be held in Detroit in April.

BHS is the only district in the State of Michigan (and possibly the country) to send three teams to the prestigious competition.

FIRST Tech Challenge is more than building robots. Teams design, build, program, and operate robots to compete in a head-to-head challenge in an alliance format. Students develop STEM skills and practice engineering principles while realizing the value of hard work, innovation, and sharing ideas. Teams also must raise funds, design and market their team brand, and do community outreach.

Good luck to the BHMS teams. The Administration, staff and fellow students are cheering for you!

SHOP AT KROGER AND SUPPORT BHMS

You can support BHMS when you do your regular shopping at Kroger by designating Bloomfield Hills Middle School as your Plus Card Community Rewards program recipient. The Kroger website provides instructions for setting up a new account, or for designating Bloomfield Hills Middle School (Organization Code 28755) to your existing account.

Strengthening Families Program

Birmingham Bloomfield Community Coalition (BBCC) is offering a free skill and relationship building program to families of 10-14 year olds for seven weeks on Mondays, April 16 - June 4, 2018, from 6:00 - 8:30 p.m. at Bloomfield Hills High School.

Strengthening Families Program is an evidence-based parent, youth, and family skills-building curriculum that:

• Prevents teen substance abuse and other behavior problems
• Strengthens parent/youth communication skills
• Increases academic success in youth
• Prevents violence and aggressive behavior at home and at school

Youth need skills to help them resist the peer pressure that leads to risky behaviors. Research shows that protective parenting improves family relationships and decreases the level of family conflict, contributing to lower levels of substance use. In just seven sessions you and your child could learn how to build stronger communication and respect for each other.

Both dinner and daycare will be provided. To register contact Carol at cmastroianni@bbcoalition.org or call 248.203.4615.
