CALLS TO THE OFFICE ABOUT AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

In the past few weeks, the office has received a significant number of phone calls or messages asking that a student be reminded to attend an after school extracurricular activity, such as a club meeting or sports practice or event. BHMS clubs and team sports are in full swing, with literally hundreds of students participating. We ask that you remind your students of their activities before they come to school, and limit calls to the office to school-related issues or emergencies.

COSTUME GUIDELINES FOR OCTOBER 31

BHMS students may wear costumes to school on Wednesday, October 31. As a reminder, this is a half day of school and all students will be dismissed at 11:35 a.m. Costume guidelines are as follows:

  • No masks, hoods, sports helmets or other concealing head wear. We need to see the faces of everyone in the building.
  • No gory, bloody costumes or other costumes that depict violence.
  • No props, including but not limited to light sabers, replica swords, guns or knives, etc.
  • No clothing depicting or promoting drugs, cigarettes, alcohol, profanity or double meanings.
  • To avoid the perception of ridicule, costumes should not impersonate adults or students in the building, or religious or cultural figures.

Regular dress code rules apply:

  • Tops must extend to the shoulder and cover the entire midriff.
  • Bottoms, as a general rule, must be at least at fingertip level or longer when arms and hands are straight down to the side, and must sit high enough on the hips or waist to cover undergarments.

If there is a question about a costume, please have your child see Mr. Fitzgerald, Associate Principal, in advance. The School Administration will be the final authority regarding the appropriateness of costumes.

GIRLS SWIM TEAM INFORMATION MEETING

All girls interested in joining the BHMS Girls Swim Team should plan on attending the kick-off meeting on Monday, November 5, from 5:15 p.m. until 5:45 p.m. at the Bloomfield Hills High School pool. A parent is encouraged to attend with their student if at all possible. Program information will be distributed at the meeting. Girls will not swim that day. The first day in the pool will be Tuesday, November 6, from 5:15 p.m. until 6:15 p.m.  Please know that no student will be allowed to swim unless they have a physical on file with BHMS and their Pay to Participate fee has been paid. Questions should be referred to BHMS Swim Team Coach Karen Parker at kparker@bloomfield.org.

FEE COLLECTION FOR 6, 7 & 8th GRADE ROLLER BLADING UNIT IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Beginning in January, students in grades 6, 7 and 8 will be participating in an in-house skating program during physical education classes. Roller blade skates will be rented from a company called Skatetime School Programs. Due to insurance purposes, Skatetime's roller blades will be used exclusively. The fee for this unit will be $10 per student for roller blade rental, and should be turned in to Mr. DiVito or Mrs. Wenson in phys ed classes, before Friday, November 9. Please send in $10 cash (change is not available) or a $10 check made payable to BHMS. The fee includes delivery and pick up of the equipment as well as use of the skates for five days of skating during P.E. class.

This skating unit has been implemented because of its emphasis as a "Lifetime Activity." Skating provides a variety of benefits, which include balance, coordination, motor skills and a top rated cardio-respiratory workout. Students will also learn basic skating skills such as starting, stopping, forward skating, cornering, and a number of safety tips for being a smart skater. Students will be required to wear wrist guards and a helmet, which will also be provided. However, students have the option of bringing their own helmets and wrist guards. The helmets and skates will be sanitized daily. Knee pads will also be provided for those who choose to wear them. Please refer questions to Physical Education teacher, Mr. DiVito, at fdivito@bloomfield.org. Thank you for your support in this great activity.

8TH GRADE WASHINGTON, DC TRIP HAS LIMITED SPACE AVAILABLE

The 8th grade Washington, DC field trip in April has fewer than 10 spots open before the buses are filled. Every year this is a wonderful opportunity for students to visit the nation's capitol and learn firsthand about some of the amazing historical figures, landmarks and events that make this country great. This year the trip runs from Wednesday, April 10- Friday, April 13.  Because there are a few remaining spots, registration is being extended until Monday, October 29. If your student is interested, please don't delay registering them before those spots fill up. Click here for complete information about trip costs and registration instructions.

STUDENT CLUB MEETING HOURS AND GUIDELINES

The BHMS Club Calendar is on middle right side of the BHMS website's main page. Please bookmark that calendar to look up your student's club meeting dates and meeting start and end times.

A reminder about dropping off and picking up your students for clubs. Out of safety for your student and consideration to club sponsors, students may enter the building no earlier than five minutes before a morning club meeting time, and must be picked up immediately at the end of an afternoon meeting. If your schedule does not accommodate this, we recommend signing your student up for the District's Kidz Zone before and after school care program. The program runs from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. Pre-registration for Kidz Zone is required, and fees apply.

REMINDER ABOUT NUT RESTRICTIONS AT BHMS
Please remember that BHMS IS A NUT-RESTRICTED BUILDING, 24-HOURS A DAY, SEVEN DAYS A WEEK. There are students in the building who are highly allergic to peanuts and all kinds of tree nuts, and their well-being is of concern. Students should not bring lunch or snacks containing nuts or nut products. Additionally, please be sure that anything given to the office staff, to teachers, for classrooms, bake sales, end-of-sports or club parties or any other occasion are free of all nuts and nut products. Thank you so much for your consideration.
