FEE COLLECTION FOR 6, 7 & 8th GRADE ROLLER BLADING UNIT IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Beginning in January, students in grades 6, 7 and 8 will be participating in an in-house skating program during physical education classes. Roller blade skates will be rented from a company called Skatetime School Programs. Due to insurance purposes, Skatetime's roller blades will be used exclusively. The fee for this unit will be $10 per student for roller blade rental, and should be turned in to Mr. DiVito or Mrs. Wenson in phys ed classes, before Friday, November 9. Please send in $10 cash (change is not available) or a $10 check made payable to BHMS. The fee includes delivery and pick up of the equipment as well as use of the skates for five days of skating during P.E. class.

This skating unit has been implemented because of its emphasis as a "Lifetime Activity." Skating provides a variety of benefits, which include balance, coordination, motor skills and a top rated cardio-respiratory workout. Students will also learn basic skating skills such as starting, stopping, forward skating, cornering, and a number of safety tips for being a smart skater. Students will be required to wear wrist guards and a helmet, which will also be provided. However, students have the option of bringing their own helmets and wrist guards. The helmets and skates will be sanitized daily. Knee pads will also be provided for those who choose to wear them. Please refer questions to Physical Education teacher, Mr. DiVito, at fdivito@bloomfield.org. Thank you for your support in this great activity.

It will be shipped  to deployed service members around the world, or distributed to veterans in VA Hospitals across the country. All collections are due by Tuesday, November 6. The Be the Change club members thank you for helping them help our troops.

CALLS TO THE OFFICE ABOUT AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

In the past few weeks, the office has received a significant number of phone calls or messages asking that a student be reminded to attend an after school extracurricular activity, such as a club meeting or sports practice or event. BHMS clubs and team sports are in full swing, with literally hundreds of students participating. We ask that you remind your students of their activities before they come to school, and limit calls to the office to school-related issues or emergencies.

STUDENT CLUB MEETING HOURS AND GUIDELINES

The BHMS Club Calendar is on middle right side of the BHMS website's main page. Please bookmark that calendar to look up your student's club meeting dates and meeting start and end times.

A reminder about dropping off and picking up your students for clubs. Out of safety for your student and consideration to club sponsors, students may enter the building no earlier than five minutes before a morning club meeting time, and must be picked up immediately at the end of an afternoon meeting. If your schedule does not accommodate this, we recommend signing your student up for the District's Kidz Zone before and after school care program. The program runs from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. Pre-registration for Kidz Zone is required, and fees apply.

REMINDER ABOUT NUT RESTRICTIONS AT BHMS
Please remember that BHMS IS A NUT-RESTRICTED BUILDING, 24-HOURS A DAY, SEVEN DAYS A WEEK. There are students in the building who are highly allergic to peanuts and all kinds of tree nuts, and their well-being is of concern. Students should not bring lunch or snacks containing nuts or nut products. Additionally, please be sure that anything given to the office staff, to teachers, for classrooms, bake sales, end-of-sports or club parties or any other occasion are free of all nuts and nut products. Thank you so much for your consideration.

BHHS Equestrian Team Competition

Reflection By Leah Kendal, 7th grade WHMS Student Ambassador:

Recently, the Bloomfield Hills High School (BHHS) equestrian team went to a horseback riding competition in Armada, Michigan. Ani Winkler (pictured here), a sophomore at BHHS, is on the team. Ani has been on the team for two years, but this was her first year as a rider, because last year she was a groom.

In the competition she rode a horse named Leroy. Even though you don't need much experience to be on the equestrian team, Ani has been riding for seven years. Her favorite part of the competition was the gaming events. In these events, everyone on the team stands together to talk, joke, and have fun.

Ani placed well in her events, although the team as a whole didn't place too well. She says being on the team is a lot of fun and that everybody is supportive of one another. The team is stepping up its game next year, and Ani encourages everybody with riding experience to join the team.
